Hi there,

I'm new to the whole PS3 modding scene. I recently picked up a PS3 Phat CECHC 60 GB, the first model to be released here in Europe and a CECHK using for tinkering purposes.

My ultimate goal is to get a near-stock experience on my BC CECHC model, running my purchased PSN packages on firmware 2.80. I already successfully installed 2.80 on this model, downgrading from 4.9x.

On my other (not so important) model, I've successfully managed to convert the system to DEX and downgraded to 2.80 DEX firmware. Sadly, there's not much info on signing for DEX firmware. I still managed to get an FTP server running on it, but there's not much info out there on how to patch firmwares to allow for unsigned code.

A couple of other projects (not related to PS3) I created include 'WA for Legacy iOS', that aims to bring WhatsApp back to older, unsupported iOS versions with a custom app and server.

I'm ready to learn whatever it takes to get unsigned code running on these older firmwares, 2.80 specifically.

Thank you to all members of PSX Place for the sheer amount of information about everything PS3. I'm looking forward to sharing my findings in the future!

What do you like about older firmwares?

personally I would love to get another BC model and put Linux on it.

I don't know much about 2.80 aside from the fact a lot of people prefer the old xmb, but I know people have managed cfw on even 1.00. you can try mfw builder, but be careful.

I love the look of the older XMB. It's so minimalistic, especially at night with the all black XMB.

I did try MFW Builder, but I couldn't get it to work with 2.80. It looks like the minimum version that's supported by MFW Builder is v.3.41. I would love to learn it how to make a 2.80 CFW/MFW. Currently, I'm trying to resign every PSN game I own to run on OFW 2.80 DEX firmware. Some games are quite easy to convert, like Midnight Club LA: Complete Edition, but I haven't been able to get some games like MGS 4 and GTA V to run, both crashing right after the gameboot logo. I suspect it's most likely because of breaking SDK changes, but I can't confirm.

Small Update: I mucked around more in the 2.80 DEX. I've resigned a couple of PSN games to get them to work on DEX. Games that were released around or before the 2.80 update like Assassin's Creed work fine and even some games that were later released onto PSN, like Grand Theft Auto IV, work. GTA IV will give you a notification to update the system software, but you can close the pop-up and play the game just fine. I'm guessing (not sure at-all) that this is a check that the game does by itself through the API's, or it could be because the SDK used for the PSN version of the game is higher than 2.80. I've also tried Grand Theft Auto V, but that one doesn't want to launch at all; kicking me back to the XMB.

To summarize, it's pretty hit or miss which games want to run. The best possible option for running games on 2.80 CEX would be a CFW because, as far as my understanding goes, retail PSN games won't run on DEX unless you decrypt all assets (edat, sprx, eboot, etc.) and resign the eboot as debug. It's quite easily doable for 'simpler' games like Midnight Club LA, which only has an eboot to resign, but harder to do for games like Metal Gear Solid 4.

I'm going to investigate this some more, and throw my CECHH at the problem. For science!

I've always wanted to turn a PS3 into an FTP server, for streaming movies and stuff on my home network. How'd it go with yours? What do you use it for?
