Hello world. There are a few reasons why I decided to go ahead and register here but the main one is my PS3s. I have two of them that were, up until a couple weeks, collecting dust in a closet. - A CECHA01 and a CECHE01, both have the YLOD. I'd like to get into the world of electronics repair with the main goal of bringing both of these back to life someday.
Thing is, I'm a complete noob when it comes to electronics repair, I've never held a soldering iron or a multimeter. I've watched a good amount of videos from various people making good use of them- Odd Tinkering, My Mate Vince and MattKC are a few examples - and I do have one of my own irons sitting here in its box, but that's it, I don't have any clue on where to begin. I have read up on a couple of RIP-Felix's posts about where to begin when it comes to troubleshooting YLODs and the first step that they suggest involves soldering a SYSCON chip. So yeah, I haven't taken a step and there's already a giant hurdle for me.
Now before someone says "Dude, forget it, this is way out of your league, go find someone to do it for you" let me I say that I actually do want to learn, electronics have been a huge part of my life so I believe it will only help me in the long term if I start learning instead of always leaving others to do so. It's the "teach a man how to fish, feed them for life" saying. Plus it's not just these PS3s, it could be anything, for example the various other consoles that I'd like to repair, one of them being a PS2 39001/N that has no power light when plugged in.
In addition to those I have two more PS3s both of which I recently found and bought at a thrift store - a fat CECHH01 with the YLOD, and a slim CECH-2101A that powers on but is completely unresponsive beyond that - I imagine these aren't as valuable as the former two I mentioned, so I bought them on the premise that I can use them as practice first before going onto the real things.
By the way, I do have a library of physical PS3 and PS2 games, I also have a few more PS2 consoles besides the one I mentioned, but... eh, I don't think any of it is worth showing off.
So yeah. Hopefully this forum post is a first step. Any advice on where should I start? What're the best things to read/watch when first starting out with this sort of thing? What sort of project should I try first? Thanks everyone.
