Help HDD Upgrade

Good morning, I would appreciate some advice from the "experts" since I'm a beginner trying to get my sons PS3 up and running again.
The PS3 has been jailbreak which I believe is the OFW 3.55 and rogero multiman, since it had a small HDD (80GB) I upgraded to a 500GB. At starting I get a message that says to connect a USB thumb drive (FAT32) with version 4.70 or superior. Following the advice from someone on this forum I created a carpet "/PS3/UPDATE/" in the UPDATE a put the multiMAN ver 04.70.00 BASE CEX (20150516) and changed the name to "PS3UPDAT.PUP"everything in CAPS. I START and SELECT at it start reading the USB thumb drive.
The problem that I'm getting is that it loads a message that says that it could NOT find upgrade data applicable and insert USB thumb drive. Could somebody help me figure out what I'm doing wrong???

You are not using the right update file. Multiman is a backup manager not PS3 Custom Firmware.
You have a lot of reading to do, don't act rashly..
You should download Habib Cobra 4.78 CFW. The PS3UPDAT.PUP file should be about 200Mb. You should do a MD5 check to make sure it's not corrupted. Then flash the console with it.
You can install multiman pkg now. (not by renaming the file but by using the install pkg feature.
If ever you don't take precautions, it's easy to flash a OFW & lose jailbreak...
Also be careful not to go online without a proper setup (using psnpatch for example).

Thank you bguerville, you probably right that I have lot of reading to do! To install Habib Cobra 4.78 CFW is done in the same manner as described in my post?

Yes, in theory you can install either from the xmb (settings column) or from the recovery menu.
Once Habib is installed you should download webMAN-MOD 1.43.26 updater pkg, install the package then launch it.
On Reboot go to webman setup page & choose parameters.
Dynamic fan control should be set with temperature between 60 & 65 degrees.

I would normally have advised Rebug instead of Habib cfw but it might be a bit complicated to begin with.
You should read about a few things

* PSNPatch (safely going online)
* XMBLock (for safety with kids)
* webMAN-MOD (it replaces all backup managers & manages fan control)

rebug never installs from recovery anyway. Ran into that problem a few times swapping drives etc.

latest habibs will work fine and you can switch to rebug later via the xmb if you really want to.

dynamic fan control's a mess on my system too (cechlxx). so if your fan goes out of control disable that in webman. :)

Thank you for the advice, I tried using the recovery menu but I still get a message that says that it cannot find any update data on the thumb drive. As you mentioned I put the HABIB in the USB thumb drive "/PS3/UPDATE/" all CAPS. I tried that last option on the recovery menu which is "System Update" is this the correct one? should remane the HABIB CFW to another name? Also I get a mention to update to V.4.70 or superior? what is that all about?

Thank you advance for your help

the firmware file MUST be named PS3UPDAT.PUP, if it isn't it will never install

Check to make sure you don't have a Game in the BluRay Drive, It will by default look in the BluRay Drive first for update.

Second, Are you sure that the PUP is spelled properly? PS3UPDAT.PUP (drop the E from update). lol just saw "kadorna2" comment sry

P.S. I use Rebug, it has webman integrated.

I just reread your original comment and i think your kid may have accidentally started an upgrade trying to play a newer game then your current CFW could support and it started to update and they truned it off in the middle of the update, now when you turn it on it asks for the update it was in tring to install. At least that what it sounds like. If so you are screwed, you'll need a hardware downgrade to fix it.

Thank you for your advice doctorwoo05, I don't know it could have updated since I made sure it didn't connect to Internet.

Have you tried putting your old hdd back? Does the xmb still boot fine in 3.55 with the old drive?

If it does, then keep the old hdd temporarily, you could update to habib 4.78 from the XMB (settings column) instead of recovery. Make sure you don't have Internet on or a game in the drive & use the usb port closest to the BD drive to insert your usb key.
Once on 4.78, if everything boots fine, replace your hdd with the new one. Use the same usb key to reinstall habib 4.78 with the new drive.

@doctorwoo05 could still be right btw.
The PS3 can be updated without Internet connection you know. Just a game in the BD drive for example is enough...
Have a look at the contents of a game disc you will see there is a PS3UPDAT.PUP there. It's a OFW update file!
That's why whenever you need to update your system software you should remove any game from the drive.

Hello bguerville, that option is no longer possible the disk has been formatted.

i don't know if you can do a rogero 3.55 "999 downgrade" and start from "GO" without fixing the current install errors. If you did accidentally have a Disc in when you tried to install "what you thought was" Updated CFW. It wouldn't have even tried to install the File you renamed, seeing an unknown structure and flags, it would in turn do an OFW install from that disc instead. If that scenario happened, it won't be possible to fix without hardware.

The problem is that we are not sure what exactly happened...
Is it possible that a kid attempted the update from a game disc as doctorwho05 suggested?
Was the PS3 fully working before you changed the hdd? Did it boot into xmb? Did you check the firmware was still 3.55?

make sure that you have visible file extensions (For win 7: Bad Request) because you can make mistake and name you update PS3UPDAT.PUP.PUP now Try Rebug REX, if fail try D-REX if fail try Rebug 999 downgrader if fail... Then you need to jailbreak again.

FYI there is no 4.70 rogero, and multiman is an aplication not a firmware. Also if ps3 now asking for 4.70 this mean you was on 4.70 not 3.55.

Thank you for you help Gentlemen, as I mentioned before I'm totally a beginner. The PS3 was working perfectly before the HDD upgrade, how can I check the current firmware to see where I'm at?

kozarovv noticed something I missed.
If the system is now asking for firmware version 4.70 minimum, it means it was NOT in 3.55 before changing hdd. .
Do you confirm it is the case? It's asking for 4.70 minimum?

If it is, a firmware update was launched, accidentally or not (probably from a game disc with a 4.70 PUP as explained earlier).
You would not have noticed it without looking at the system information in xmb.

If it's the case, the console would need to be flashed again with proper hardware to regain CFW as you will only be able to install an official firmware equal or above 4.70.
