PS3 Help loading PS2 games - CFW 4.86

Hello, thought I'd post here as I've tried without any luck and spent hours googling and looking through Youtube/threads here.

I have a PS3 slim CECH-2012A running CFW - 4.86.1 Rebug Lite, Rebug Toolbox 2.03.04, and webMAN mod 1.47.30, and ran SENenabler

I have been able to load my PS1 and PS3 ISOs onto my PS3 and play them without issue, however when trying to load PS2 games I just get a black screen and I have to unplug/re-plug in power.

I have seen a guide on using multiman to convert to a PS2 classic, but I get the same error (black screen). I also have the PS2 classics desktop application but as the PS4 game is larger than 4GB I just get an error when trying to encrypt saying its larger than 4gb.

I would appreciate any help, thank you.

The conversion to "PS2 classics" format is not going to help with your problem, it doesnt matters if the game is a plain and standard (not encrypted) ISO or if you encrypt it to the "PS2 classics" format, because in both formats the PS2 emulator used in your PS3 model (a.k.a. NET emu) is going to do exactly the same with the game

You should start by looking at this compatibility list to see if the game you are trying to boot is listed as "unplayable" in red

Thanks, I have checked and tried a few different games but all have had the same result, they are all listed as playable on the list (Final Fantasy X being one)

If you are on 4.86 why are you using SEN Enabler? As far as i know, if you have used the fix cobra hashes, sometimes you also have to use the ps2 emu collection from Evilnat. I use 4.86 rebug lite too and ps2 compatibility works great.

Maybe you should try to install cfw from scratch. Disable sen enabler before, to be sure. i don't know if you used the enable sen access option as a spoof, so check it out.

Also install the ps2 config database from aldostools, since it adds config files for certain ps2 games and automatically creates the config file next to your iso games, which improves compatible games.

Thanks

Thanks, sorry I am still a bit new to all of this. I think I'll just wipe and start from scratch as you said.

I'm guessing the only things I need to install is the CFW, the rebug tools (REBUG_TOOLBOX_02.03.04.MULTI.16) - webMan_MOD (current version?), and the PS2 config database? Also, sorry, where do I find the ps2 emu collection? Again, sorry for being a bit thick here, just spent days on this with little luck.

A firmware reinstallation could help, but before that check the MD5 of the file ps2_netemu.self
Sometimes it happens that the PS3 crashes when is trying to boot a PS2 game and it creates a "bad block" in the hdd that corrupts the .self or maybe is because some app patched it

Take a look at this talks, it should have MD5: 9F12B168034AC7C99DFFB186501A6F50

I already wiped it, reinstalled REBUG toolbox, , webMan Mod 1.47.30 and the PS2 config from here: https://github.com/aldostools/webMAN-MOD/releases

Also I put in a brand new hard disk today - so would a wipe do the job?

Lastly, with webMan mod, noticing fans very loud - how to fix this?

Update - its all working well now. I guess I just installed too much into it.

Still need to work out the fan, and I guess figure out a way to minimise the borders on PS2 games, but everything is now working :-)

If you using the default Dynamic Fan Control in WebMAN MOD its kind of aggressive when the temps change because of the algo aldo's used with it, a bit to agressive really... I don't like it.

If you switch it to "auto2" this one is way less aggressive. and might be better suited to you.

What I did was find a manual constant fan speed that wasn't too loud but also gave good cooling, For me I have it set to 38% constant fan speed for PS3 games and 42% for PS2 mode, and my temps never go above 68*C no matter how much I play, stress the PS3 with high demand games. I have had it on it kness to the point it was lagging like hell and the temps still did not go over 68*C on a high demand game.

I would say try the Auto2 or a manaul speed that suits your needs and find that balance.

I am happy you got it sorted out. PS3 is a really lovely system, great possibilities and greater developers on this site. Any problem you have, some developer or user is probably going to help you.

Hi Steve C
many thanks for posting your experiences here. Could you please describe the steps needed to play PS2 game after updating to Rebug 4.86.1 Lite and installing Rebug Toolbox, WebMan Mod and the PS2-config. I never managed to get the PS2 games running. I am on:
- Rebug 4.84.2 REX
- REBUG Toolbox 02.03.02
- WebMan Mod 1.47.09

I tried it with PS2_Classics_Launcher but never made it, so I am considering to update to Rebug 4.86.1 Lite.

Also many thanks to all who are contributing and helping here. Sorry for my English, I am not a native speaker ;-)

sorry, but that user was only around for one day.

i do not recommend updating to rebug lite. you will lose features. if you want to update to a newer CFW, consider Evilnat 4.90 CEX instead.

you should be able to play ps2 games by placing the ISO file under the PS2ISO folder on the ps3's internal hard drive. i mount them with webman mod. you may have to install ps2 classics placeholder also.

CONFIG files may be needed for some games. place the file in the same folder as the ISO with the same filename (before the dot). webman will find the config and load it if named correctly.

after mounting and pressing X on the disc icon, the ps3 will reboot into ps2 mode. your screen may go black for a few seconds. some people mistake this for a blackscreen hang.

ps2 games can make the ps3 run hotter than normal. you can set a seperate fan speed for ps2 mode under webman's settings. i recommend at least 40%.

Hi Coro
thanks a bunch for the quick reply.

So I will then look for the instruction on how to upgrade from Rebug 4.84.2 to Evilnat.

I understand I need WebMan Mod at least in the version 1.47.44 in order to work on Evilnat 4.90. Do you know from the top of your head which version of Rebug Tools I will need on Evilnat 4.90?

It's recommended to update to latest build of webMAN MOD before install Evilnat 4.90.

To upgrade to 4.90 you don't need to do anything additional. You simply install Evilnat 4.90 over Rebug 4.84.2

Rebug Toolbox is intended mainly for Rebug. Evilnat 4.90 PEX already includes on XMB almost all the features found Rebug Toolbox. Only a few functions will be included in the next release of Evilnat 4.90.2 or later.

Hi aldostools

Many thanks for the advise and all the great work you are doing. I did not find time to follow your instructions until last weekend.

I think I might have problem with the BD because executing Rebug Toolbox and Multiman both result in black screen. After installing the WebMan Mod 1.47.45 installer pkg I can not install it pressing L1 + X, it results in the black screen as well. After that I have to do the "hard shutdown" of the console by pressing the start button.

However I can play PS3 games in ISO format from external USB formatted as NTFS.

Now having read more than few posts I think I will proceed with following steps:
1. uninstall WebMan prior to the installation of Evilnat 4.90 noBD
2a) Settings / PS3 Restore / Quick Format ???
2b. Install Evilnat 4.90 noBD
3. Install WebMan Mod 1.47.45

Is this a viable plan?
Do I need the step 2a and when is "PS3 Restore" an appropriate measure_

Prior to all of this I will open the PS3 clean it, apply new cooling paste and check the BD cables.

Many thanks for all the help from everybody here.
