PS2 High Pitch Sound Coming out on the TV Speakers

As the topic says I have a high pitch sound coming out on the TV speakers.

Details:
  • Not always there but it is about half of the time. Can be there one boot and gone the next if you are rebooting within seconds of the last boot.
  • It shows up when the PS2 browser menu is loading and goes away after the game\dvd\hombrew app boots.
This PS2 is a SCPH-30002 v3 with GH-007 motherboard.

What it isn't: (As I've already checked)
  • TV
  • AV lead
  • Power supply
  • Syscon daughter-board (GD-013)
  • Disc drive pcb (GM-043)
  • BIOS
  • DAC (IC517)
So got to be the motherboard (GH-007) thing is though you would think electrolytic caps near the AV port but I also tried it using Digital optical cable and a sound system and the sound is still there. So it must be being generated either at or before the PS2 sound chip (SPU2 / IC504) because the digital optical signal circuit comes straight from that chip on different output pins to the AV port circuit which goes through a digital to analogue converter chip before going to the AV port.

UPDATE: Boot ROM BIOS dump verifies the same as my working similar model PS2 so probably not bios corruption.

UPDATE: Also removed the DAC (digital to analogue converter) IC (IC517) from the motherboard and the sound is still present through the optical audio port.

UPDATE: Was the sound chip. I removed it with a hot air station and installed one from another faulty PS2 motherboard and the issue went away. I installed the suspected faulty sound chip back onto the other faulty PS2 motherboard, the one the donor came from and it now has the same sound issue.

Since switching the faulty SPU chip to the other motherboard i've had a bit of a play around with afew games and homebrew and discovered.

Homebrew apps with no sound like OPL and launchELF the high pitch sound disappears.

Games Without Issue:
Jax and Daxter

Games With Issue:
Bombastic
RE Code Veronica
Silent Hill 2
Silent Hill 3

Rebooting the PS2 to the browser menu using the soft reboot button combo the sound issue returns.

Anyone in Australia got a faulty early model PS2 and want to send me just the CXD2942AR sound chip. If so PM me so we can discuss postage.
