PS2 How can I boot opl with a Modchipped console

So the way in doing it now is disabling the Modchip on startup and using a freemcboot card

But I don't want to use freemcboot

Another way I see it being done is by using dev1/dev2 but I don't like how you can't just get to the standard ps2 bios, I think you can press x on boot to boot into it and skip dev1/dev2 but it skips all the settings you've done one the matrix menu (or does it just boot into the bios and keep the settings?) Is there another way?

Also is booting opl from HDD bad? I think I've seen that somewhere I'm not sure

I have a a modbo 4, the modbo 5 was causing me issues
Instead, install FMCB and copy OPL over to the memory card. I recommend that if your console has a modchip, use a FMCB release with version 1.953, since later versions have issues with certain modchips.
