PS3 How to convert PS3 from PAL to NTSC with Rebug CFW.

https://www.psx-place.com/threads/i-cant-play-psx-pal-games-on-my-ps3.18264/#post-161083

This worked for me playing my Mega Man X3 & Hell Night PAL only games I have after ripping the disc to my HDD.
This doesn't work for me. Burned games work. And I can close from the burned game, and I can see 480p in the settings. But the moment I try to run a legit NTSC game disk, or an NTSC ISO, it gives me that error, and 576p has replace 480p in the display settings.

I have noticed zero of that. Every burned game I have tried works fine.

Wait so are you already using the "Cobra PSX Launcher"?. PAL to NTSC conversions will always run with problems. I'm using HEN, maybe its different with CFW. There also irisman but I don't have experience with that

Do the PS upscaled mode works?

I have no idea what is going on. I put NTSC burned disks in, and they work. I try to use legit NTSC games, or NTSC ISOs, and they don't.

You should define what you mean with "legit NTSC games", do you mean when you insert an original physical disc from NTSC region, or when running a "PSone classic" from the USA store in PKG format
Both are "legit NTSC games" but the results could be different

Btw, you should try to boot the games with cobra disabled to see if the problem is caused by a cobra bug

A physical NTSC disk.

If I remenber using the "Cobra PSX Launcher" will skip this error but there a big change the games will run with problems (audio desync, fmv stuttering)

Im in the same boat that you YoltsTrev , since years.
but the opposite situation
My consoles CECH-2001a / CECH-2501a CFW Cobra Rebug 4.86.1 ARE NTSC CONSOLES
I live in a country where i originally learned to write & speach in French !
so its really not convenient for me , EACH time im able to find a FRENCH (subtitles/dubbed) version i will highly prefer to use theses for a better game/story immersion. but sadly Im living with everything NTSC/ENGLISH format around me.

All my PSX(Ntsc)/PS1(Pal) are in .Bin .Cue files) on my USB stick (to save hddo space)
ALL the NTSC games boot flawlessly with Webman & attaching to virtual memory slot 1 (renamed psx for me) work correctly.

BUT.... ***Here the Problem***

ALL THE PAL PS1 games
I find that starting them with the brewology homebrew : "COBRA PSX LAUNCHER" boot flawlessly , no issue with image or sound at all. when troubles arrive is when i try to attach the game to virtual memory slot 1 using the PS button on the controller. BAMM FIXED SCREEN until i had to force reboot manually (ouch) :(

My question :
I dont know who created this little gem (Cobra PSX Launcher) as it work flawlessly to boot PAL PS1 games
the only issue the author(s) seem to not have tested the homebrew in all ways...

Could it be technically possible in 2022 to actually take this homebrew and see how its build , see how it work and ultimatelly fix the connection between it and the virtual memory card slot and MAYBE , MAYBE ULTIMATELLY add an option that will able to play NTSC or PAL MULTI-DISCS games ! ?? (swap disc to continue on disc 2 etc...)

Im EXTREMELY curious to see somes debate here , Im sure the actual devs around here can fix it once for all.
that would be just awesome !

IT IS THE ONLY MISSING ASSET FOR HAVING A FULLY RETRO COMPATIBLE CONSOLE THAT READ EVERYTHING SONY

I even bought this device thinking it could help me getting rid of error code when i try to boot a PAL bin/cue game with webman , i tried all the option without any luck yet :( :( :(

That link is the original report by an annonymous wiki editor, but the other day i was rewriting and organizing the page and now is better explained here:
https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/PS1_Emulation#PS1_BIOS

That same person proposed the solution, is just he didnt wrote the new code entirelly and literally, basically is about checking the third charater of the TITLE_ID in the game and based on it apply the correct patch to the bios
There are only 3 posible results for that patch: A, E, J
SLUS-12345 = A
SLES-12345 = E
SLPS-12345 = J

In the other TITLE ID's that doesnt matches this search patterns the bios patch could be disabled (by default the bios is = A)

Hi Sandungas , Did it mean (sorry for my bad english...) that i need to rename the folder in wich are my PS1 (PAL) Bin/Cue files in order to be "patched" ? by webman making the booting process sucessful ?

for exemple :

on my USB stick (where my PSX-PS1 games are)

I have a folder named : PSXISO

and two other subfolder named :

Metal Gear Solid-PSX-PAL-FR-CD1 (.bin .cue & cover art files inside named exactly the same than folder)
Metal Gear Solid-PSX-PAL-FR-CD1 (.bin .cue & cover art files inside named exactly the same than folder)

Did this mean that i have to IMPERATIVELY rename my game folders like this to unlock a informatic internal process to patch the game or something allowing a sucessfully webman mode booting under cobra rebug (enabled) ??

[SLES_015.06] Metal Gear Solid-PSX-PAL-FR-CD1
[SLES_115.06] Metal Gear Solid-PSX-PAL-FR-CD2

I initially based my build on someone here that told me PS2 ISO are IMPORTANT to be named this way but not PSX-PS1
so im quick lost now...

?

Not needed, the TITLE ID (as example SLES_015.06) is stored inside the main executable file of the BIN/ISO, and as far i remember is always located at the same offset
We can find the game region by reading that offset in the BIN/ISO file (inmediatly before booting the game) and apply the bios patch associated with that region

Think in it this way... the official PS1 emulators are applying that patch to the bios too, but is based in the IDPS
The IDPS contains 1 byte that indicates the region of the whole PS3, the PS1 emulators reads the IDPS and configures the PS1 bios "on the fly" to restrict you to a single region (the region of your IDPS)

Cobra overrides that official patch by changing the region always to NTSC/J (ignoring your IDPS and ignoring the region of the game)

And the solution suggested by the annonymous wiki editor is to read the region of the game (ignoring your IDPS) and configuring the PS1 bios to the same region than the game

I was not sure of what i was reading when i found this wiki editor page but with your clear explanation (many thanks) it seem i stumble on the right page afterall.
would be the ultimate fix for everyones problems reading theses damn (but so nostalgic ones) games ;)
i hope someone (or team) will be able to put that project together real soon !

After further testing tonight
it seem that little box do the job well for thoses (like me) that dont have the chance to own a multi region (free) NTSC Television.

I managed to be able to boot PAL PSX games successfully AND it didnt crashed when it came time to create save files on the Virtual Memory Slot ! (unlike Cobra PSX launcher homebrew AND Irisman that gave the infamous fixed black screen !) Soft brick?

All we need now is a useful truly working permanent fix like explained (re-edited) by Sandungas.
https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/PS1_Emulation#PS1_BIOS

EDIT @sandungas
in your opinion , this fix must be made inside the CFW or it could be made inside Multiman or Webman Mod ?

In cobra (and his fork named mamba), cobra is a module integrated in the firmware that is always active at the background and can apply patches to the emulators
Ok
so since Cobra Rebug Team is not around anymore....the chance are slim to none to see that change effective soon i guess ?

EDIT would not be easier to mod/hack the 'Cobra PSX Launcher' available on Brewology ?
it detect PSX-PS1 region automatically and change it to NTSC so no need of converter hdmi to hdmi device hook between the console and the television anymore...

the only think is to find a way to associate the PS1 PAL .bin/.cue to be able to create a save file in the virtual memory slot since it dont work for PAL games = fixed black screen (soft brick ?)

....I mean ...."IF" its too much work to change the integrated cobra module....

?

I think Cobra/Mamba is the proper target for this kind of things. I don't think it would be a lot of work tbph.

Unfortunately there are too few active ps3 devs so in practice you will probably find it just as hard to find someone willing to add/modify a feature in Cobra as you will for another orphaned homebrew project.

In a recent thread, the subchannel data handling in ps1 games was clarified after some research & the basis to add support for it in an external file per protected game at ps1 emu level or other means was established but so far, to my knowledge, nobody worked on its implementation in Cobra/Mamba. Nobody new seems interested or willing to spend time on ps3 coding anymore.

Don't despair though, as long as the proposed feature is properly documented, at some point someone will probably pick up the slack & implement whatever is "in the queue", that is basically what Evilnat did last time he was around.
