Installing CFM after harddrive upgrade

(Can't remember what CFM I was on before I swapped the hard drive, but it is jailbroken)

Got a new Hard Drive to upgrade my old one. I didnt do anything to the hard drive, just stuck it in and turned on the ps3. Figured it would format and do everything it needed to do.
Its asking to install the firmware update from usb.

I downloaded REBUG 4.75.2 REX EDITION and put it on a fat32 usb:
/PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP

In recovery it asks me to press start and select at the same time, It checks for the update on the usb. It says:

No applicable update data was found
Connect storage media that contains update data of version
4.65 or later, and then press START and SELECT buttons
at the same time.

I redownloaded the file in case it got corrupted or something.
I tried a different usb this time and formatted it to fat32
Still same message pops up.

Also, just I [BETA v0.4] -- 4.75 HABIB - COBRA (v7.10) CFW
That didnt work either.

What do I need to do to get this thing running again?

My guess? You need the exact CFW you had on there before. It was 4.65 something.
I'd stick the old HD in there and update it to Rebug 4.75.1 (4.75.2 got pulled). Then put the new HD in and supply the Rebug 4.75.1 PUP again.

Try install Rebug 4.65.2 rex, if you get that error again then try to install Rebug 4.65.2 D-rex to exclude that you are not on DEX firmware.

So I tried Rebug 4.65.2 rex on the usb, that didnt work.

I popped out the NEW hard drive, stuck in the OLD one and updated to the latest rebug. (version REBUG 4.75.3 REX is available now)
It installed just fine on the old hard drive.
I can now be sure the usb is formatted correctly, the folder structure is correct, and the update file is just fine..

I took it out and stuck the new hard drive in again. Tried REBUG 4.75.3 REX again since it was still on the usb. Didnt work! :(
(I tried the usb drive in both ports as well)

No applicable update data was found
Connect storage media that contains update data of version
4.75 or later, and then press START and SELECT buttons
at the same time.

Could there be something wrong with the new hard drive?? I never tried it on a regular pc.
I purchased this one from Amazon:

"Toshiba 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 5400rpm 2.5-Inch Internal Hard Drive (PH2100U-1I54)"

Via ps3devwiki.com:

For compatibility, if you have a SATA-300 (sometimes called SATA-II or SATA2) or SATA-600 (sometimes called SATA-III or SATA3) harddrive, you should sometimes set the harddrive via jumper to enforce the slower SATA-150 speed, instead of default 3 Gb/s of SATA-300 / 6Gb/s of SATA-600.

Maybe try this, or format hdd in pc put harddrive to turned off ps3, connect usb with update and then turn on PS3.

Here's what I did when I installed my 320GB HDD into my previously-left aside PS3:

- Install 3.55 Downgrader PUP
- QA Flag the system and check the QA Flag status with REBUG Toolbox
- Install 3.55 KMEAW CFW
- Install any post-3.55 CFW of your choice.

I've never seen this, but I would make sure the system is QA Flagged with REBUG toolbox.

Also I would enabled System Update Debug in the Debug Settings if it isn't already.

Make sure the usb drive with the update data is connected to the port closest to the BD-ROM.

If none of that helps, try a different USB drive. Some drives just won't work for upgrading hdd/recovery mode installations.

Does the activity LED on the USB drive flash when you're trying to install to the new hdd, when you get the message hold select + start and observe it.

Bah, this is so frustrating.

Put the old drive in again.
Qa flag is enabled
System update debug is enabled

Put the new drive back in, didn't work!
Tried another usb drive and it didn't work. Tried 3 different ones.
Ill try again tomorrow to see if it flashes, my TV is upstairs and my ps3 is downstairs, and the controller has to be attached so I have to keep running up and down the stairs so see what is on the screen. Didn't think to look at the lights.

Kind of odd that your PS3 and TV are in different rooms/levels of the house, definitely doesn't make things any easier. Maybe you should consider at least temporarily consolidating the PS3 and TV until you get this solved.

Have you ever successfully completed a System Update from Recovery (Not From XMB)? System Update from Recovery and installing a new HDD use a different self file than their XMB counterparts called emer_init.self, and it may not have the same USB compatibility.

ThaDraGun dont use cobra cfw to fresh install... i had the same problem, i've to format my ps3 hdd and then with rebug cfw gave me error, solution? Cfw habid 4.75 (normal not cobra) and it work, then i install rebug, try it ;)

I like it except in times like this. TV on the wall, no cables hanging, no media boxes cluttering up. Everything hidden. All the games are on a hard drive so no need to worry about swapping discs.

I plugged in a USB that has lights.. This is now the 4th different usb Ive tried I think. (All of which I have used before to upgrade the ps3)
As soon as the ps3 is powered on (usb plugged into the second slot) the light on the stick glows solid. When I press the start select the light flashes continuously and then the message pops up that there is no update it stops flashing and glows solid again. Tried anouther one, no light when ps3 is powered on, when it does its searching it flashes once, then flashes a second time, then off when the message pops up.

I usually upgrade from the xmb since its so much easier. I have done an update from recovery before tho. A long time ago when I first was jailbreaking my ps3. I didnt know it could be done from xmb, once I learned that I didnt update from recovery anymore.

Just trying differnet things to see what happens...
I stuck the old hard drive back in and tried to update from recovery and same problem.
I booted the ps3 with no hard drive to see what message it would give me. It wouldn't let me do anything it did say there was no disk or something along those lines. I thought maybe the ps3 didnt see my new hard drive, but that is not the case.

I tried HABIB STARBUCKS 4.75 V1.00 SONY PS3 CFW
Didnt work for me. :(

I have no idea what to try now.
I started only putting one screw back in the drive. Swapping them out too much. Sony has some pretty crappy screws. Im worried Im going to strip them! Tried other screw from my pc and they dont fit. If these strip Im screwed!

ThaDraGun, and you already check if the hdd that you want to use is ok? Because i've seen bad hdd giving installation errors...

ThaDraGun - have you tried this suggestion that I have made a while back? This should work in most HDD swapout-triggered firmware reinstallation situations - this is what I have done and I got my PS3 up and running since, even though CrystalDiskInfo (SMART) says that the HDD is in a BAD state.

Here's what I did when I installed my 320GB HDD into my previously-left aside PS3:

I just plugged it into my pc and I heard it spin but nothing showed up on my pc. Went into Disk Management and it said it needed to initialize it first. Did that. Drive came up, Unallocated. I formatted it to NTFS. It shows up as a drive on my pc now.
Took it out, put it back into the ps3. Same error: no update found.

Hmm, Didnt try that. Where do I find the 3.55 Downgrader PUP?
Do I install that on the xmb when my old hard drive is in?

Use the HDD that you intend to upgrade to and when asked, first use this Downgraded PUP by the now-retired dev Rogero:

3.55 Rogero Downgrader RSOD.PUP download - 2shared

After that, INSTALL the KMEAW custom firmware IN RECOVERY MODE (STRICTLY THAT FIRMWARE ONLY AS I CAN PERSONALLY SAY THAT THIS ONE WORKS WITHOUT ISSUES FOR FIRMWARE REINSTALLATION, BUT REMEMBER TO BOOT INTO RECOVERY MODE AS YOU CANNOT INSTALL ANY FIRMWARE ON TOP OF ANY 9.99-SPOOFED DOWNGRADER FIRMWARE IN STANDARD BOOT MODE (IN XMB)), which can be found here:

PS3 Custom Firmware Download Links + 3.41 & 3.55 OFW | Se7enSins Gaming Community

Once you have done that, check the QA Flag status and enable it if it is disabled and then install ANY custom firmware of your choice.

FML. That didnt work either.

I put the old hard drive back in again. Installed the downgrader from xmb. It worked just fine. It said it was on 3.55 downgrader..
Put Kmeaw 3.55 Custom Firmware onto the usb. I went into recovery mode and again it says I need firmware update 9.99 or above! I tried the usb in both ports. The usb flashes just the same as before.
So now Im stuck on 3.55, right?! :(

Is there as special way to format the usb possibly?

EDIT:
The USB was formatted to fat32.
I tried formatting to exfat since someone on youtube said thats what it had to be. That didnt work either.

EDIT 2:
Also tried with a game in the drive and without a game.
Tried formatting the new hard drive to fat32 as well.

EDIT 3:
Just installed QA Toggle pkg incase the toolbox didnt do it right. Ran it twice, Went to network settings, did the button combo thing and the extra menu popped up. So thats right.
Tried in recovery mode again, No luck.

What? No, you're NOT stuck on 3.55 - ignore 9.99 and continue with the KMEAW CFW installation in recovery mode and after that, Install any custom firmware of your choice - I did this without issues so I am at a loss for words as to why you're having problems.

Oh and no - there's no 'special way' to format the USB stick/drive.

No, Im saying it wont let me install the firmware in recovery mode.
I can't continue on.. it Keeps giving me the message:

Tried both ports, tried formatting usb differnet ways. Nothing.
