First of all, I assume you've patched it with bgtoolset before attempting to install CFW right?
Also, is it stuck while still copying the update to the internal HDD or during the update itself (after having already rebooted once)?

no i have not patched it, im learning. its stuck while copying to hdd from thumbdrive

initially it was from the latest playstation update. at this point im just trying to get to the xmb, when entering safe mode it freezes when seleting any option besides reboot. if its toast i can start over with ofwcorrect?

If you've updated to OFW you have to patch it first or it won't accept CFW.
You can probably safely reboot at this point, it won't even start installing the update if it's unpatched so probably no harm done.
If you're stuck and can't get to XMB you'll need to reformat the HDD on your PC to remove the botched update file. The NAND / NOR should be untouched so it's not a hard brick. You will lose all your game saves and unsynched trophies though.
If your system is NAND based (CECHA/B/C/E/G) it'll bring you right back to XMB with the OFW you had. If it's NOR (any other model), it'll ask you for a firmware update and you'll need to install OFW 4.91 again at this point (it only accepts CFW after reformat if you had CFW when you reformatted). Either way after you're back in XMB, do the patch using bgtoolset (you can use MrMario2011's videos for step by step instructions), then install Evilnat 4.91.2. Don't forget to disable automatic updates so it doesn't happen again!

Omake:
If you don't want to lose your save games and trophies, since you've already had CFW before you might have dumped the ERK to a USB disk. If you still have the ERK backup you can create a backup of the HDD using the PS3 HDD Reader tool, then you can restore the user data after reinstalling the CFW via FTP.
If you don't have a backup of the ERK, you can still gain access to your user data by creating a bit-by-bit image of the HDD. You will need free space of at least the size of the HDD, e.g., if your PS3 has a 160GB HDD you'll need 160GB of free space on your computer, even if the PS3's HDD was not full. You can create the image using the Linux dd command, and on Windows you can use any number of freeware utilities. After reinstalling CFW on your PS3 you can then dump the ERK and use it to decrypt the backup image and read your files.

thats perfect thank you. i lost 10000+hrs of saved game data before i installed cfw. figured since i was starting over why not jailbreak it. Question what is ERK? i do have a save backup when it was 3.85 version. i cant remember but this will help alot. thanks again

ERK stands for "EID Root Key" - basically it's the master key used to encrypt all the data on the PS3's internal HDD. It's unique to each console, which is why you can't move hard drives from one PS3 to another.
CFW (only CFW, not HEN) allows you to export the ERK, e.g. by saving it to a file on a USB disk. Having the ERK allows you to pull the HDD from the PS3, plug it to your computer and gain access to the files, even if the PS3 itself breaks. In your case, if your PS3 does not boot and you don't want to lose all your saved games, you can backup those saves from the drive on your PC (you will need the ERK for that), then reformat the drive and once you get your PS3 running again and have CFW installed you can restore the files.

No, it will stuck now forever.
You have experienced so called boot loop for which only solution is format HDD. Or format cache partition but for that, You need ERK.

You cannot install CFW over OFW past 3.55. But this is not reason of update loop. Reason is broken FAT32 on that partition or some other Sony bugs in updater. However:
when entering safe mode it freezes when seleting any option besides reboot.
That's not normal behavior.
i plug it in and nothing happens

Or, as I said, they could dd the entire HDD, reformat it and then recover their files after they install CFW and get the ERK.

@NiQ Which doesn't change anything because it still need to format it or - which he cannot do currently - cleaning dev_hdd1. Changing only status of data recovery.

Yeah, true, but at least he won't lose his save games, trophies etc. that way.

At this point he might as well format anyway:

Basically format the HDD on a PC, and try to reinstall OFW from safe mode (if it allows you to do so after formatting the HDD on a PC).

After that, follow this workaround guide to get to bgtoolset (thanks @NiQ ) and proceed to CFW thru the browser as usual. Once the browser exploit is done, restart and install CFW as you normally would.

appreciate the links,so im not sure why the hdd isnt showing up in file manager, what would a ps3 backup or the erk file be called?

ok i found the hdd, it says its uninitialized.how can i format it and start over. i had evilnat 3.90 cfw i think.
You probably mean 4.90.
Let the PS3 format it. After it's formatted it'll ask for firmware, at which point you'll need to reinstall Evilnat, either version 4.90 or 4.91 (you can upgrade but not downgrade at that point). Make sure you don't accidentally install OFW or you'll need to do the jailbreak again.

Initializing will make that disk clean for PS3 (because overwrite it by MBR/GPT) and she will format it. If you still experience boot loop, it mean that you have other issues, hardware one, not software.

I paste you links which you didn't read...
i had evilnat 3.90 cfw
Such CFW not exist. But whatever You had, now you have OFW if downloaded and started installing firmware update from Sony servers (you didn't make it clear what you did in first post and further).

my bad, yes it was the most recent evilnat, 4.91

i read them, i havent done it yet. i need to use ps3 hdd reader but need encryption code. i dont want to toast my hdd,
i accidentally started the sony update and i got a error code saying data was corrupted. i tried reinstalling the most recent evilnat version but it froze at 98%. i than tried to reformat to ofw but it froze on the safe menu page. plugged hdd in pc and it came up uninitialized and thats where iam at currently

If you've already lost your saves and whatnot, I'd go ahead and initialize it, then format on the system. If you still have content you'd like to save, don't initialize. Plug in a different HDD to format, install cfw, then get the erk. Use @Berion 's guide to get the important files from your old hdd.

If you have another HDD that you don't mind erasing then you can put the current HDD aside and use that spare HDD to initialize your PS3 instead. If you don't have a spare HDD you can create a bit-by-bit backup of the PS3's HDD using the Linux "dd" command (note that you must have free space at least the size of the PS3's HDD).
Either way, get your PS3 running again and reinstall Evilnat (if you had it installed when the console broke, most chances you don't need to jailbreak again, just insert a USB disk with CFW when it prompts you). After you have CFW, dump the ERK (can be done from the CFW tools menu), then use PS3 HDD Reader tool on your PC to decrypt the drive and pull whatever files you want off of it.
