PS3 Installing CFW on stock 4.82 PS3 that has previously been modded

Which Console are you inquiring about?

Hello! I recently bought a used CFW compatible PS3 Slim from a local charity shop. Currently the CMOS battery is dead but I will replace it this week before proceeding with any hacking. It is currently running what appears to be stock firmware 4.82 but has apps like Multiman installed, however when I try to launch them, I get an error and HEN isn't installed either. I therefore think that either the original owner reinstalled OFW at some point or maybe HEN is deleted when the CMOS battery dies (unsure about that).

I now want to wipe the console completley and install the latest Evilnat 4.93 CFW and am wondering what the safest way to do this is since I don't know what has been done to this console before. Will reinstalling a stock firmware undo any flash patch?? I read one guy on reddit saying that reapplying the flash patch to a ps3 fat that has been hacked before has a high risk of bricking it. I don't know how true this is and I am using a slim but it's still something that scares me a bit.

Currently what I am thinking about doing is firstly installing either 4.91.1 HFW or 4.93 HFW in safe mode and then doing a full factory reset. After that I am going to continue like normally dumping and vertifying the flash, patch the flash and then install EVILNAT 4.93 in safe mode (however a bit unsure about if I should use bgtoolset or flashwriter but am leaning towards bgtoolset). Does this sound like a safe plan??

I am thinking about maybee installing the older 4.91.1 HFW since it 1. is comatible with bgtoolset and 2.if something goes badly wrong with the flash writer I have the ability to update to 4.93 inside the xmb without shuting down the console.

Any tips would be appreciated!

The idea of bguerville's PS3 Toolset that it avoids to the max any chance of bricking the console while applying the memory patch. That's why it's one of the most trusted tools out there.

Having said that, if you apply the exploit again with PS3 Toolset, your console will not suffer any kind of bricks.

And for what you are telling in your message, the previous owner had some form of hacking applied and then he installed OFW on top of it, that's why you can see homebrew apps installed but can't launch them.

In short: use PS3 Toolset, apply the exploit and install CFW REBUG 4.82. Don't update your console with OFW 4.93 as the Toolset hasn't been updated to support it yet.

Great! Any reason why I want to use the older REBUG and not the newest EVILNAT? I do watch a lot of Blu-ray so I would think that it would be better for me to use the latest version with the latest keys.

Also would the factory reset affect anything? I previously thought about factory resetting it before doing anything but since there is mutliman on it there is probably some other fun stuff on the HDD that I could copy of it. I am therefore thinking about maybe doing the factory reset after installing CFW

Because you are on OFW 4.82, and there's been some breaking changes in OFW 4.89, so I'm not sure if it's possible to go from OFW 4.82 to CFW 4.93 in one go. Bear in mind that the Toolset does not support 4.93 yet, so it's better to stay in the safe zone.

Factory reset will wipe your HDD contents and configurations. It's not necessary for installing CFW.
