Internal HDD Compatibility (Sata, ATA, SAS, SCSI)

Hello humans,

I have in my possession an internal HDD adapter using a SATA plug. I am looking to get a big format HDD for it and I am now stuck between a couple choices. I am looking for a 2tb or larger HDD. with my current choices I can get a 3TB SAS drive using either ATA or SCSI protocol for 3 to 4 time cheaper than a SATA. I have read ATA used to be compatible? would it works if I use a SATA to SAS adapter on an ATA based sas drive?

UPDATE: PS2 is fat model 3000x

With the price difference between a 2TB sata and a 3tb SAS I don't mind only having a 2tb partition

If You talking about internal HDD, then maximum size of a partition is 128GiB, however, each PS2 game making their own chain of partitions. Well, You totally don't understand how logic looks like on PS2 HDD, so here it is a tutorial which should explain to You how things works. ;)

If You have larger drive and want to use it, You need limit it by setting HPA or DCO area (i.e by hdparm application).

You can't use SAS and SCSI drives on the PS2. You would need a SCSI or SAS controller, which the PS2 does not have the hardware for. It cannot be added either. Despite SAS using what looks like a SATA connector, the connector is a bit different both in physical shape and signals. SAS controllers can support SATA drives but not the other way around. While SCSI can be found using IDE connectors, they are not the same signals.

You have to use either IDE drives or a SATA adapter with a SATA drive. I personally use a 128GB SATA SSD in mine and SMB whatever doesn't fit. If you want something large, just go with a 2TB 7200RPM WD Black or Seagate Barracuda SATA drive and a StarTech IDE to SATA adapter (assuming you are using the official network adapter).

I finally went down the road of a Sata 2TB drive (Seagate Barracuda) but gets a black screen after the fmcb splash screen. waiting on a new HDD to see if it's going to resolve the issue

Instead of using someone else image (which will cause problems sooner or later) install FMCB in this version. Black screens in FMCB/FHDB in 1.9xx are mostly cause by conflicts with modchips.
