PS3 Is it possible to install HFW without external storage?

I'm on an unmodified super-slim PS3. It has been updated to 4.89. Is there any way to install HFW 4.89.1 without storage media? If not, is there perhaps some way to factory reset my PS3 then only update to 4.82 (apologies if this isn't the version with the webkit exploit, I'm new here) and go from there? If not, that's okay, I'm just curious.
Thanks in advance.

AFAIK it's not possible to downgrade a super-slim, period. To downgrade you need to set the QA flag and you need a full CFW to set that flag, and super-slim doesn't support CFW. Best to just get a 2nd hand phat or early-model slim for ~$100 and keep the super-slim for PSN.

EDIT: Regarding your second question. The only external storage you need to install HFW is a simple USB disk. I'm pretty sure you have one of those and if you don't, they cost pennies.

It would be probably possible to host a proxy server or custom DNS that would redirect any requests sent to Sony's server to yours - that way you could get your PS3 to download update PUP that you're serving, not Sony's server.

if you are already on a firmware capable of installing HEN, then you can use update debug to install the pup from the HDD. :)

Sounds like a "we do what we must because we can" project. Would be cool to show off (and it also means that you could MITM and install possibly malicious firmware if someone's trying to update from 3.55 or lower), but probably not practical cause it's a lot more complicated than just buying a $5 USB disk.

Directly from OFW, the only way I know to install a custom PUP without USB storage is to use a proxy as someone already mentioned.
Roughly speaking, you would need to configure a proxy redirection of the URL request that the PS3 XMB system update feature makes to get the latest official pup file from a s#ny server to a local web server's URL pointing to any pup file.

By the way does it mean the update is pulled by HTTP? Cause I'd assume they use HTTPS and obviously you can't add your own CA certificates to a PS3 with OFW, so I'm really not sure a proxy would work.

So basically you say that if someone connects their PS3 to your malicious Wi-Fi and happen to be currently running 3.55 or lower you can push whatever modified firmware you want (which may or may not include malware) and they won't have a clue.
What malicious WiFi?
We were only talking about proxying here, nothing malicious.
But yes fundamentally, someone connecting to such a proxy would install whatever PUP file the proxy redirects to.

I meant suppose I were "evil" and wanted to install malware on my neighbor's PS3 without them knowing :)

"Evil" is a very strong word for such shenanigans.. lol
Your neighbour would have to be using your proxy in the first place, using your WiFi alone wouldn't be enough.
Not exactly stealthy if you were up to no good.

There are ways around that. The easiest would probably be to configure the DNS service running on your router to return a fake IP address for ps3.update.playstation.net,redirecting it to a malicious server. Alternatively you can configure the router to hijack all connections to specific IP addresses and redirect them to you or even use a transparent proxy. You can even do this on a home router using 3rd party firmware.

I don't recall saying there wasn't a way. LoL
