PS2 Is there a way to modifiy the bios to use more ram?

Well i had the chip pulled and it does not have a complicated looking pinout its 54 pins/balls 6 by 9, I think i may already know what bga socket it is. I just have to pull it up online. I think its is the same pinout as the backwards compatible ps3
FBGA54 800mhz RDRAM 2.5v

I have been trying to find a chip that matches and not coming up with anything thus far. Im hoping to find something currently in production

I say it again if it was possible it would be already done. Waste of time.
I have some time to waste and i learned something new about the ps2 so its not a complete waste even if i am unsuccessful

Well i may have discovered why adding ram would not work. Correct if i am wrong. According to a AI Generated Answer witch i don't trust, so lets say, its half true.

Each Memory chip of the PS2 is connected to a 16bit bus and thus can't use more memory. Is that correct?

I would have to increase the memory bus of the PS2 in order to use more memory. Is that correct?

So say i find some chips to solder in there that are higher capacity, well they wouldn't work

But there are playstation 2 systems that have more memory, The PSX DVR system i think has 72mb of ram.

How would you in theory increase the ps2 memory bus speed? From what i understand its internal. Is that correct?

I would have to increase it to 32bits instead of 16bits. In a mips /risc system were is the ram bus located? Is it inside the cpu? Is it physical or is it software?, Would i need a different cpu or the other emotion engine to get it to work.

There are PS2 variants with more RAM, but you got the numbers wrong.

Anyway... Don't be discouraged by unsubstantiated claims like that this was done before and yadi yada... You WILL learn something along the way.

I suggested PS2-Linux for a reason btw., because I am not sure if RDRAM Test (or how the name is) can handle other sizes.

Substantiate the claim you made, or it remains what it is... An unsubstantiated claim, i.e. you trying to discourage him with your CLAIMS that you FAIL TO SUBSTANTIATE is much less of a contribution than what anyone else here did and it doesn't matter how often you repeat bollocks claims... Repetition does not make it any more true!

You are SPAMMING! Stop it!

IM NOT SPAMMING!!! Since you last time disrespected me i have no respect for you. My post is valid. If it was possible it would be done long ago!!! Tere is already an post with this theme on internet you need to find it. i will not do it for you.PS2 is not a new system its almost 25 years old so if it was possible it would be already done and people would mod the system for more ram. But its not and im not Spaming!! And also he will run window on ps2 what is also not possible. I dont know what he will archieve with this and i really dont care about that and thats why i told him to focus on either ogxbox where ram upgrade is a matter of parts and 2 hours of work, what i have alredy done or totaly another system like one board computers if he wants to run windows. Linux on ps2 is also only "experimental" in my eyes not for a serious work. You can do nothing on the ps2 linux. If you dont agree with me and you think im spammer thats your problem and not mine.

PS and dont forget to ban me for a week like last time because i dont agree with you.

  1. How are your unsubstantiated claims related to the thread? They are NOT, hence you DO spam your OPINION.
  2. All your yadi-yada explanations and claims don't change the facts, regardless how often you repeat them.
  3. Whom are you to tell or demand from anyone, how to invest THEIR lifetime?
  4. Are you crying, because you violated rules and got the receipt?

I have not violated the rules. You know what you did I have not respect for you and I wil never interact with you ever again. I postet valid points here and their are not unsubstantiated. So therefore i dont accept yours. Im done with you .

Sure they are unsubstantiated... You haven't posted A SINGLE SOURCE, to substantiate them!

He also told you MORE THAN ONCE, that he has the time and wants to invest it REGARDLESS of your OPINION and hence you "saying it again" over and over and over IS SPAMMING!

This is an interesting topic, I believe that many people think about upgrading the RAM of consoles and some have already been succeeded like the original Xbox, Dreamcast, SNES VRAM from the good ol'ASSEMblergames time and Nintendo 64. The original Xbox v1.6 is possible by soldering another RAM chip on top and lifting some pins, I believe that it's possible to increase the RAM of the PS2 in a similar way, through these vias that are on the bottom PCB side. It should be possible to upgrade to 128MB like PS2 TOOL DTL-T1x000 (to confirm this would have to check the model of emotion engine that is used CXD9542GB probably?, guess it's the same as the retail version and has only 2 RAM channels, then it probably scaled to the other chips that in total are 8x RAM chips in the PS2 TOOL), I suggested using the same type of PS2 RAM memory ripped from a donor, it's interesting that the pinout is 54balls for the 32bit RAM normally 54balls bga is used for 16bit 184pins PC RDRAM and IIRC 90balls bga is for 32bit on the 232pins PC RDRAM, you didn't need to have pulled one to check this, the pinout of the RAM is in the service manual usually IC102 and IC103 depending on the model (but at least I hope you gained knowledge about it, which is good!), and speaking of model I noticed that all ps2 that have the RAM exposed (some models have some capacitors in the way) including the PS3 BC with COK-001 board have the vias on the other side. What could be done is to develop a very thin PCB, and put 6 more RAMs to get a total of 128MB (or remove the stock 2 rams and make a PCB on top layer put 4x chips and the bottom layer another PCB with space for more 4x chips and the aditional net resistors and capacitors, this way could maybe design to accept the more traditional PC RDRAM 90balls bga chip). The worst part is having to remove the BIOS chip, get a rewritable chip, hexedit the BIOS (would require someone with that expertise willing to help) comparing it to a DTL-T1x000 or PSX DESR where the RAM size is checked by the bios. I talked to the guy who upgraded Dreamcast's RAM to 32MB once, he said that it might be necessary to patch the Linux kernel to make it see the extra RAM.

Best regards,
Link.

Seeing the extra-RAM actually might NOT require an update to the BOOT-ROM-Hardware itself! I think that's entirely possible via software!

I dont see any empty ram slots there. and there is not any advantage of more ram as nothing will use them. Nobody has tried that because first the bios is not upgradeable on ps2 thats the first thing.

I am not a tech guy but i could see extra ram being potentially be useful for ps2 homebrew.

Reading your comments its quite clear where you stand on extra ram on a ps2. I think you just need be helpful rather than stomp your feet and failing that - not posting further in this thread

Nope. I stand for what i have writen , and the last bit what you wrote is laughable. i will surely not do that. And i will not reply only to one guy here. and if you readed the whole thread you know who.

I think you think good but... yes you can add ram to 1.6 xbox on top of the original ram, but and here where it is diference. the added ram shares 95% of the pins with old ram chip but the adressing pins are separate and are somewhere else on the board and the few adressing pins are soldered with wires. On the ps2 it will not work the same because ram work exactly the same on all system. yes there are vias under the actual ram chip, but im sure there are not aditional ram adressing pins there, because why would sony put it there, and right under the chip that has its own adress lines... Thats the diference between, test tool and retail. and it will do nothing also with you additional pcb and chips. because every added chip need new adressing lines to it. Thats the problem with it. you can have there 5 or 6 chips but if there is only one adresing line only one chip will work. And that is the thing nobody in this thread is not accepting. You need to check the emotion engine on the retail consoles if it has the adresing lines for aditional chips! if not the this whole thread is irelevant. More ram chips --- more adresing line. And the bios i will not mention here it is a whole another thing...
