PS3 Looking into modding COD Classic with PC mods

Has anybody heard anything about people trying to mod this game? I had a look over the files, typical pak.pk3 which I was able to open up on my PC and looking through the contents is easy enough. Now I am not looking to get full on singleplayer story mods working, not sure that is possible. I am trying to look at taking baby steps here. Trying to replace weapon models with some higher quality ones from some recently released mods people still make on PC for the first game. Since this is basically a port of the original PC exclusive game at the time, I figure formats should be largely similar and compatible.

I will admit I am a noob at creating COD mods on PC, although I have released 2 Battlefield 2 historical total conversion mods, so I am not a noob to the wider world of modding. I am just looking for some info on perhaps how to extract, replace files and rebuild the archives. As mentioned before I am able to open the pak.pk3 file on my PC but if I go to replace files it pretty much makes the program freeze and say "not responding". Now when I mod on Battlefield 2, you deal with .zip archives, and you can simply drag and drop things into the archives and it simply rebuilds itself. I expected this would not be the easiest with this game but looking for any help I can find.

My plan here was at least to research and see what all I can get away with modding while still having good performance. Now I know that there is an obvious limit to what we can do with the PS3's 256mb memory limit, so I have to be mindful of that. I am wanting to possibly just try and replace weapons and textures. Not going to be dumb and use 4K res and expect it to work. But I just thought resizing some already upscaled texture packs to work within the restraints of the PS3 specs could give us a much better looking game visually, more of a fan made HD remaster. I can see there is some room for improvements since it was a 2003 PC game on a much more powerful at the time console in 2006 than any 2003 spec PC. Anyway I feel like I am starting to ramble on. I just wondered if I could maybe get a little help here form the community who knows more about this stuff. I think it would be very easy to push this engine a bit further visually for sure since it is below what you would expect of any game from the era.

In the config files I see things for keyboard input like enabling console which would be awesome to get working on the PS3 port. If we can get that working maybe some PC ported community MP maps may be possible to load up in the game?
