PS2 Make PS1 memory cards which require 7,5v work on PS2 Slim?

Some PS2 Slim's (like my SCPH-77004) can't use some (third-party) PS1 memory cards because it doesn't have the 7,5v on the memory card slot at pin 3.

Some places (like this one) suggest you can connect the 7,5v from the controller port to it. But if I look in the service manual, I see that pin 3 is labeled "PS_MODE" and is connected to the mechacon, it's not a unused pin.

So, is it safe to connect pin 3 of the memory card slot to 7,5v or is there any other method (excluding the use of a multitap) to get all PS1 memory cards working on the PS2 Slim?

That's interesting. I didn't know about that. it could explain why my third-party, madcatz memory card for PS1 doesn't work with the PS3 memory card adapter.
