PS2 MX4SIO or SMB?

Hello.

So i am 100% new at this and i had it in my mind to play games on my PS2 via SMB. Seemed like a good, simple plan. Get mini router, use USB drive (for now), plug Ethernet cable into my system and i am good to go. WOW. Technology!
I've heard of this other method called MX4ISO but i also heard it had a lot of comparability issues so that seemed like too much trouble. Plus you cannot use a memory card since both slots are taken? (what do?)

Well, this was all before i learned about IOP and that apparently SMB has the highest impact on it to the point that it can cause performance issues on games. That sounds terrible, my PS2 soils itself enough as is playing demanding (or poorly made) games like Onimusha 3.

So my question is: All things considered, which is the best option? Does MX4ISO have less effect on performance than SMB? Have the compatibility issues been sorted?

Bonus questions: Is it safe or recommended to get a cheap one from China via Ebay? Is there something that can go wrong with it? Amazon and i don't get along, so...
Any recommendations for the most compatible SD card for it?

Thank you.

Thank you.

Could you please confirm or deny if SMB affects performance on demanding games either by lowering framerate or poor asset streaming (pop in)? How does the second option listed compare? I have no frame of reference so i don't know if it's exceptionally bad in SMB, if all methods have the problem or even if it's a problem at all.

Also my original plan was to use this router TL-WR902AC AC750. Is it suitable? Is there a better alternative?

I'm not using SMB because I have NA (which means also internal HDD usage, best solution from all because of read speed far beyond disc one) and MMCE. So I don't have much experience, I base on ppl opinions (SMB v1 was for very long time the only real play solutions for late Slims and available for decade, which means also widely tested across many OPL versions/builds).

Thank you for the help. My plans have been altered. For now I'll by a MMCE device and play that way. If the performance is not satisfactory I'll turn to SMB and use the MMCE device just for the homebrew and saves.
