Ciao!
We all know the "Ring of Death", or whatever you call it, which affects some PS2 Slim caused by the flat cable of the optical unit which in certain positions of the laser carriage takes on a curvature such as to touch the discs while spinning and scratching them until they are unreadable. One of the solutions that are used the most is to block the flat cable with a piece of adhesive tape in order to reduce its length and avoid creating that bend, but it is a solution that I never liked too much.
In my case it's a problem that I have encountered not many times on the Slims of my collection, as it also depends on the flat cable itself if it already has an excessive curvature or not and the use of the trick with the piece of tape has not always worked. Until a few days ago when I bought a batch of PlayStation on ebay including a 70004 with this problem, and I decided to tackle it in a "scientific" way, so I took a caliper, AutoCAD a 3D printer and, after some prototypes , I printed this piece which I called, with too much imagination, "The PS2 Slim's RoD Annihilator". I attached it to the laser body with a piece of double-sided tape and it fits perfectly into the PS2 shell without hindering the movement of the laser unit, but above all it prevents the flat cable from lifting and causing problems.
I think I'll print one for every Slim I have so I get rid of the awful pieces of tape.
I don't know if something like this already exists, but i haven't checked.
(Do not mind the dust and dirt I have to clean it
)
