PS1 Need a list of CD burners that will burn slow enough for the chipped PSX?

I won the chipped PSX from my bro in a game of Janken, so now I finally want to get serious about burning PSX games. Funnily enough the details I gathered in my youth, back when I still had access to this system (which my Mom kept until recently) were actually gathered second-hand from people who also burn PSX games, and I remember it quite clearly. It's entirely possible this information is incorrect, in which case I'm off track, but what I heard was that the PSX had a security measure in place that even the chip we had installed would not bypass. Supposedly the PSX wasn't CAPABLE of reading discs burned at speeds even a fraction above 2x. The why of this wasn't important, but maybe the laser was too weak? This was before blue laser readers... anyways, the weird thing over on my PC is when I try to burn a disc I cant lower the write speed enough. If I set it to 1x or 2x in ImgBURN I get about 8x unless I use a really old burner. I had one with a max speed of 2.8x but it wasn't quite slow enough. So now I'm gathering info, specifically model numbers of CD burners that are old enough to have a low enough max write speed, this will make my search easier. If anyone has a list can they share it, and if not but you have a burner for PSX games, what is the model of your burner? Lets make a list right here right now. Oh and yes I still have my PS3 and it does PSX just fine, I don't really have a good reason to set up the PSX beyond nostalgia and fucking around, but I got this unopened pack of 1x-16x discs here with the Sony logo on them and I may as well use them. Oh, and has anyone had any success forcing a newer burner to burn that slow? Why won't it work, any ideas?
 
i was a captain of the high seas back in the day.

you need 2 things.
1: good blanks
we used to use Tao-Yuden (TY) disks - Philips used re-branded TY's

2: a burner that had a big buffer - to avoid glitches.
scsi was the way to go together with a Plextor or Yamaha burner.
and the burn-speed is set by the software - slower gives a better "image" on the dye.
4speed was the prefered writing speed even though the setup was x16 capable.
 
Genuine high quality Taiyo Yuden CD recording disks made in Japan have been discontinued long ago. Unless you are willing to pay a high price to buy rare stocks on the market. The cheaper TY CD recording disks we can buy now are actually manufactured by CMC. In fact, like Verbatim AZO are good enough, and you don't necessarily have to buy the TY brand.
PS1 game disk is indeed more suitable for low speed burning, but basically DVD burners do not have a low speed mode for burning CDs. If you want a low speed mode, you can only go to the second hand market and buy a CD burner produced in the early years.
 
Never burn lowest possible speed. That's malicious myth which results in lowest possible burn quality (measure C1 and C2 errors thresholds). Also it is nonsense that PSX games need to be burn slow. Discs and burners for such speed not exists for decades; on modern, aim to around middle of index. Also, this have nothing to do with disc security.

Good modchip fw can handle Libcrypt and APRip. Eventually you can patch disc images to kill them.

Your burner must support write in RAWDAO96.
 
Thanks guys, these are good details. I'll do some experiments and post my results, I do in fact have a big-ass stack of old CD burners I have kept for exactly this. I'm curious to see if these official Sony 1x-16x discs will do the trick, but I'm a bit hesitant to waste the good discs on tests. They are nice, jet black with the Sony logo :eek new: but I'll see what I can order online for my initial tests
