So here's the story. My PS3 wouldn't update to latest fw so i decided to try to install CFW. how ever i got stuck on the memory dump step. It just froze there. So i tried to do a safe mode start and tried all the options with no luck.

So now i decides that the file system might been corrupt. So i swiped the HD, and now the PS3 wouldn't even boot. Figured out i need to do a low-level format on the drive which helped as it now booted.

I put the FW on a Fat32 formated USB stick (PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP) it loads from the USB for a few seconds as i can se the led on the stick flashing. But can't get past "checking please wait"

figured the HD might be fried so i tried with another HD with no success..

Is there anything else i can try before throwing it in the bin?

Have you tried to update PS3 via USB using safe mode?

(Hold power button on PS3 until it beeps, turns off, and then double-beeps)

and if recovery update doesn't work, then try to "Restore PS3 System" via System Settings

Once you restore, all "non-stock" data will be wiped from the PS3's HDD, so if you have any games or CFW tools on your internal harddrive then back them up to an external before you restore... Most of the ISOs you can copy directly over but for CFW tools you may want to copy them from "game" using mmCM to a USB, then put them on computer and make them .pkg again

and if you don't edit your CFW tools, then you can always find stock builds here or on Brewology

You said "memory dump step" so I am not sure if you were using the bgtoolset methods (which is not really needed for CFW)

Also, CECH-2504A is the end-of-line for CFW compatible PS3s. I can't recall if all 2504A models are CFW compatible or some aren't

yepp, wont work thru the safe mode boot either. and the drive is already low level formated. is it possible to put a "working file system" on the driv another way?
