PlayStation 1 SCPH 1001 stuck on boot screen

I just got a PlayStation 1 SCPH 1001 from a flea market, it turns on and shows the boot screen, but it gets stuck on Sony Computer Entertainment screen. It is not a bad laser because if it was I would at least be able to navigate the system menu. Does anyone know how to fix this?

So there are two main things it can be. I am going to say 95% chance it is the laser. Mine did this with the EXACT same model with the exact same issue. The tracks on these models are prone to failure.

That being said it could also be a modchip that became disconnected. Open the system to check this. They are only four wires so would be a simple fix if this is the case.

But what it most likely is going to be the laser. It will not go past the Sony screen when this happens due to the copy protection in place. You can try turning the system on it's side or upside down. They will usually boot this way for some reason.

While the 1001 is the best model it is also the one .ost often prone to failure. I replaced the laser in mine and cost me $15. You can also try to adjust the lasers pot & grease the laser sleds. But usually is a temp fix as it due to the plastic they used for the lasers sled becoming warped.

Thank you for your feedback. There is no modchip and I tried cleaning the laser lens but it didn't work, I'll have a professional look at it and see if he can clean it better than I can.

It is usually the sleds the laser is on that faults. They are plastic and warp over time. The reason it being outside down works as it takes stress off it moving being suspended upside down.

I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to ask.
I bought a junk SCHP 5000 from Japan. Seller said it wouldn't read disks.

However the console is stuck on the SONY Computer Entertainment screen after getting powered on. Originally it was looking normal but now it's black and white for some reason. The console will not progress further than this logo screen and will not reach any sort of menu.

I'm in Europe so in order to use it I took a power supply from a European PS1 and through a guide (I thought it was hosted here), I wired it to the 7pin motherboard of the Japanese console.

I also tried a known good laser from another PS1 and it still didn't change anything.

So, to sum up:
  • SCPH 5000
  • Jerry rigged European PSU
  • Won't read disks according to seller
  • It won't go past SONY boot screen
  • SONY logo is black and white
  • Known good laser didn't fix it.
I can solder and I have a multimeter so feel free to suggest fixes that might involve those tools.

All help appreciated!

I would check the board - look for anything that looks damaged or missing, and you can check all the many fuses. I had a PS1 where the controllers kept not working - replaced the fuse, work for a few minutes then dead again. Turned out there was a small short in the controlller/mc PCB causing the controller fuse to blow. Could be an important fuse blown on that 5000 model.

Thanks.I tested the following in continuity mode.
  • PS601
  • PS602
  • PS603
  • PS604
  • PS605
They all have continuity across them. Resistance is 000.3Ω on all of them.
