hi there, Tim (BeepFixer) here.
found this place through a rabbit hole, noticing it had more activity than the original thread I came out of from Reddit, mainly interested in joining up in the thread about PMAP as i've run into a few issues.
Me in short, used to mod psx, ps2, xbox, etc. back in the day. Ended up 'retiring' and focusing more on xbox after doing a few 100 ps2's, and I have picked up a stack of about 40 ps2's in more or less all states of decay over the last 2 decades in trade-ins, bootsales, fleamarkets etc. which i've finally decided to give the love and attention they deserve.
I followed ModzvilleUSA's video by chance, noticed a few things changed since last i checked bout 6 years back when i ordered a pile of new lenses and forgot about them and thought i'd give it a try.
Long story short, got PMAP running, blew my ear drums on the test audio signal first time as i had it hooked up with full volume
but PMAP reads out the eeprom, i get to the step of SLED HOME or SLED OUT which works fine, but INIT SKEW spins the disc up and fails. checked, laser light goes on but it fails nevertheless.
Replaced the lens (400c), adjusted the pots that both sat at +/- 700ohm by factory to 1500 and 1200, tried with the new lens, same, it fails the init.
Took the lens out of an identical drive (H/I chassis drive block) that I had prior swapped out on this same machine, that one fails in this init too.
It's a GH-026 board with a Mars III, of which I preemptively have removed and isolated the VCC line prior to all testing.
here's the exact error;
0ca50005 DVD-SL ADJUSTMENT (FIX GAIN) - Rx-command error: 122
DVD-SL initialization failed.
CR2032 has been replaced (original sony was 0.01v, new one reads 3.01v on the board) and I set reset in PMAP so that it wouldn't show off too.
I am using an older FT232 (a red one with a mini-usb plug) but it's set to 3.3v not the default 5v and is hooked up nicely on COM2. Someone elsewhere suggested switching RX/DX lines, but that just makes it timeout/not work, so i doubt that is at fault since i can dump the eeprom or drive the sled.
Drive belt is fine and mechanism is fine, switched the panel with the spinning motor just to rule that part out, also same result.
The only thing that struck me as odd is that PMAP reads out a Sanyo on all 3 KHS-400C, while the 2 original ones of my pile were white caps (assuming they are stock going by ps2devwiki, but i can't be sure they are not swapped at some point by someone else though) and the new replacement was yellow cap.
Any thoughts on what else I could try or perhaps something I overlooked?
Quick update here.
Testing today with a few other units, and have a 30004 model up and running the init skew just fine, so I'll have to take a closer look at prior unit, starting to think the mars chip wiring might have gotten undone or is interfering in some way dispite not having a VCC feed.
The good news is I can tinker with PMAP now further on a different box
