PS3 Problems playing standard DVDs on PS3

Hello, I'm new to this forum however I want to ask a question of everybody. I have a PS3 (Fat Boy) that used to play any type of cd, dvd, blue ray disc that I stuck into it. Even ones that I had created. I can guarantee that it is clean, dust free inside and out and has never been exposed to any liquids. Recently I tried to play a factory dvd and it refused to even recognize it. I have the latest version of update installed. After contacting Sony I tried restoring the PSS files, restoring the default settings, and finally restoring the file system. I also checked the parental controls at their suggestion. No change, the console plays everything except factory dvds. So, I have another Sony blue ray player. This is an older unit but still in perfect condition. It has been boxed up and stored for approximately 15 years. Model BDP-S300 when I connect this up to my tv the exact same thing happens. It will play any blue ray or music cd but everytime I load a factory dvd it states that "it can't play it" So, I also have a Dynex DX-WBRDVD1 This is a really cheap player that was sold at Best Buy for about $80 back in the day. Again this is in pristine condition. This cheap unit will play everything I place into it. Even dvds that I burned without a problem. Now my question is this. Most people agree that today you usually get what you pay for. The sony units cost way more that the Dynex unit so why won't they play? I'm very frustrated because the Dynex doesn't look all that nice but it seems like the Sonys have issues. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you

yea, sony cheaped out on the Blu Ray drives in the PS3's so they sometimes fail, usually opening the drive and cleaning the lasers + regreasing everything can coax a bit more life out of it but you'll probably end up needing to buy a new set of lasers for your drive
