PS3 Project RSX Boost: Overclock your Retail PS3 RSX Speeds (ps3 cfw only)

The Cell has been heavily underclocked in the shipping console. IBM reportedly had samples running 5.6GHz in the lab.
3.2 GHz with one disabled SPE was simply a way to get yields up and reduce costs. Like so many decisions in the early PS3s life. Do everything to get the production costs go down. Its very likely that all but the launch units can easily reach 4GHz at least.

The OC in the video was archived by raising the front side bus clock since th multiplier is famously locked. They apparently used an old FSB strap that was used in the early dev kits. I think it was 600MHz

I have also heard that they underclocked the RSX by 50mhz on both core and vram

We can enable the 8th spe right on cfw tools? But what does it even do [emoji848]

It can be enabled on some consoles, on others will fail because it's defective.

In any case, no PS3 software was designed to make use of it, so it's pretty pointless.

From what ive read so far, at least a certain range will be possible in software
The recent discovery that the 2500 slim, SS (and possibly the 2100, 3000) are not applying the OC correctly due to a possible different clock gen will be stalling any software method for now.

Might have to be a per-console thing in the future

If I think about it I have no clue how the FW can access Syscon, since for now it is a Syscon-based Overclock. You write values for the 2 registers using a TTL adapter. The RSX OC was found in LV1, syscon is LV0 afaik

If its possible, I guess logically it would be an option to reboot applying the desired clock speed and with a failsafe hopefully that resets it to 3.2GHz when re-rebooting it.

Ive got my hopes that the 2500 can even Overclock, and of course a software method is way more accessible than syscon

Initially they say modchip was need. Later they said no modchip is needed. So what is true?
It is true, modchip was that where they removed an IC and used a pico. Now its only Syscon and thats not considered as a "modchip" as its a part of the system. Its just 3-4 wires dangling out of the console

Hey folks, I'd like to share my results and ask if this is normal. I have a PS3 Slim CECH-2501A from August 2010 with CXD5300DGB and I think the max overclock is 750/850 (for the core I did not try anything higher than 750). When I try to apply 875 MHz VRAM the console freezes after around 10 seconds. I am not surprised about the core clock but I'm a little bit disappointed with the VRAM. I can't find the exact link, but I saw a comment on Facebook, a guy said he tried overclocking around 20 Slim consoles and all of them could do at least 900 MHz on VRAM. Is my result normal? Is it possible that 875 isn't working for some reason, but 900 MHz will work? Is it possible to brick my console if I try 900?

Well, that's TSMC RSX for you. They dont perform the best compared to GGB Sony.

Also the guy saying 900mhz over 20 slims:
Maybe he overvolted the chips, maybe he got lucky on them all. Model number and RSX revision are all too general

Each Die is different and performs different, there are patterns but it's always individual.

Also your values are good, past that the Performance vs. Thermals ratio worsens eitherway (diminishing returns). 900/1000 for example is just more a flex than logical to use

Anyone here with thier thick fats rsx overclocked and what clocks you are rocking I'll be happy to know:grenade:
I'll be getting one soon , delid it and replace the tokens

My 25xx has the same rsx as his (tsmc with same model) and I can do 750/950 but for some reason I can only achieve these clocks and being stable on the old evilnat before adding overclock feature through cfw menu even with smth as little as 700/800 artifacts starts to show on XMP and sometimes a freeze right after boot . It's really weird

If it's not too much trouble can you tell me what version of Evilnat is giving you higher overclocks, and how are you setting the clocks, with Webman MOD or MFWBuilder? Maybe it will give me a better result too
