PS2 PS1 game stops randomly via OPL and POPStarter using a USB drive

Hello, I'm new to the forum, hopefully this is the right place to ask.
Recently I started using OPL to play PS1 games from my USB drive via POPStarter because my PS1 is acting weird and is inconsistent in how it performs. Everything seemed to go well, but I noticed the game could just stop playing at certain points. Not mid-game, but for example when screen went white after saving or when there was some sort of scene change or just before FMV was supposed to start playing, so basically it stopped on loading points outside of gameplay, rather than randomly during it, and it is unpredictable - several times I had no problems during gaming sessions, but one time I had to fight the final boss twice and it stopped playing at the same spot. Any ideas on what's causing that issue and how to fix that?

For now the only game I played was Klonoa: Door to Phantomile, NTSC version. I wanted to ask before playing any more games, because I don't want to risk having some minor or relavitely major progress lost. Thanks in advance.

I checked a compatibility list before getting the game ready and it didn't state anything like that, maybe it was some outdated one, I have no idea. I don't remember if it froze in Vision 4-2, but I can say for sure it froze in several different moments, most notably on the Final Vision, two times. But if it's a game problem then I will play other games and see if the problem reoccurs. Thanks for your answer!

Checked Tomb Raider and it not only doesn't play music in main menu, it crashes right as I start a new game, so I can't even play this one. I'll just stick to emulating, too bad, I really looked up to playing via USB on PS2.

Use Version 1.0

Thanks for your answers, and sorry, but I'm kind of fed up with this. I will just emulate PS1 games for now. I consider buying the expansion bay for my PS2 since I have a spare HDD I don't use, then I'll try to play PS1 games on my PS2 again.

Patches made by @hugopocked 'might' fix the game. Specifically the 'Renew CodeCache Scan' variants.

He made patches for TR 3,4,5. TR 1 and 2 perfectly work on POPS but you have to use v 1.0 (of both games). Using other revisions, you have to use the old POPS gamefixes, so they won't crash at level loading (but music will be missing. To solve you'd need kHn apposite patches... Better to simply use rev. 1.0 on both games ;) ).

What I was suggesting was for the Klonoa game.

@beem2137, the game "Klonoa: Door to Phantomile" is not compatible with some versions of the game with the POPS emulator.

(PAL-Spain) (PAL-France) (PAL-Germany) (PAL-Italy)

Works fine.

But, for this versions:

(PAL-Europe) (NTSC-U) (NTSC-J)

They freeze when finish the first level "Vision 1-1".

Check always the compatibility list before try a game with the POPS emulator:

Yes, it is in spanish language but you can translate comments easily with an online translator.

Pay attention always to the Observations column (Observaciones) for read the texts.

This compatibility list is updated regularly by me, including all the fixed games by Hugopocked.

Also very important, if you are using the OPL for launch the ELF files, do not use any
of the crapy "DB" builds, specially this one called "10th Anniversary Editon", or something like that.

They are plenty of bugs, recently we discovered that this OPL versions causes freezes to
this game and others.

Use the official stable OPL versions, as v1.0.0 or v1.1.0.

And also take in mind that use USB sticks, can cause problems to the games, most of them they are not compatible.

Fragmentation with USB devices it is also a problem for the games.

Those problems you mention about having a white screen after saving, or before an FMV, are not normal,
and i suspect that it is due to the use of one of those versions of the OPL, or it is a problem caused by your USB stick.

Best regards.
