PS1 ISO generation on PS3

you know, thinking about it a bit more. I'm fairly certain I've got a wad of PSone (possibly also PS2) magazine discs up in the loft too. I still have all my Playstation magazines up there too. Might be worth a look and see if I can get those discs copied too.

i wish i still had all of mine, my brother was a drug addict and he sold my over 300 game collection of ps1 games and demos and rare stuff all for like 20p each..... it really broke my heart when i came home and nothing was left (all i had left is the stuff that wasnt with the collection which was a few games i had lent out to friends at school and a few that where under my bed) just empty racks where they had all been, i had some rare stuff back then too, my US import of Parasite eve and Chrono Cross where 2 of my fav's, was never able to get them again phsyically here in the UK (i own digital versions now but its not the same) i mean i could pay the insane price to buy them again but that aint happening.

EDIT:- wow i had no idea there was so many version's of Demo 1
acording to the redump database there is 7 versions of it.

some physical games are so expensive that I had to buy digital. xenogears is an example of that. I think it's $200 for the physical version, so I got the one on psn. I don't mind digital though as I'm all digital on the switch and series x, but I've been buying physical games for the playstation series of games. I would buy physical for the series x though, but that's just how it's worked out.

If you are ok with reproductions instead of genuine copies, chineese vendors are selling nicely looking re-productions of popular PS1 games on aliexpress nowadays somewhat cheaply. Xenogears go for ~27AUD right now.
Fake of course but they look nice and you can hold them in your hand while playing the digital version.

lol, nah. xenogears is only five dollars on psn, which is a good deal imo.

Right, here we go. Confirmed demo one now archived in this format. I've used these two images (didn't see the need for a PIC0), scanned from the UK sleeve to produce the end result on the TV as you can see. I'm quite happy with this. demo one did produce the cuecu2 warning, so still to try it out.

I've made the images I used available in my google drive. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1cmQPgkw980_rUHWpuUcmT8JSvz6-jkJD?usp=sharing

End result on the TV

I'll move on to doing the same thing with my other demo discs. (this is quite exciting!)

Did you not want ICON0 too?

I tried out demo one and ridge racer turbo, and both those seem to work perfect. No issues that I can see or hear. The silent hill demo and the namco demo discs however, won't load on the console. The console starts to do something, but never gets past a black screen, meaning you have to quit out of it back to the XMB.
Is this typical performance of games which are probably candidates to try ripping the CD again using a different program?

I also installed Overboard! and tested that last night. Again, seems to be ok. Had a quick play (took me back!)

I'll slowly get through all the games I've done so far. I'll also get around to looking out all my demo discs.

Well its possible some demo's might not be compatible, do they launch if you put the original disc into the ps3 and launch them that way ? if they dont work there either then its possibly just not compatible, that or they are copy protected somehow (but who would copy protect a demo.......)

I've just tried out the two troublesome ones on the console from the discs and both worked ok that way. I'll try redumping the discs using something other than imgburn and try again.

OK mate, the fact they play off disc is a good sign atleast, IF you still cant get them working after trying a different imaging program then there is 1 other thing you can try (when i tried to use a action replay with pop-fe back in the early days we had a similar issue) and that is to rebuild the game using a different game ID, sometimes the netemu that runs the game doesn't like certain ID ranges so switching it to a game allows it to launch, IF dumping the game again doesn't work this is the next step if you wish to try it.

Right, just tried RetroArch CD dumps and converted these in the same way as before. They do the same thing. Just a black screen.

Are you suggesting ticking the "Force ps1_newemu" option before building the package?

well wouldnt hurt to try that but that wasnt what i was sugesting, i was talking about using
https://github.com/Lameguy64/mkpsxiso/releases/tag/v2.10
to extract the game from the iso you made and then rename the SCED or SLED file to a valid one, so for example if you are using the Silent Hill Demo you could rename the file "SLED_017.35" to "SLES-01514" (the ID for the Retail game) then replace it in the .CNF too and rebuild the bin/cue then it will make the PS3 think its loading Silent Hill the finished game and it should then load on ps3, this was how we got the action replay to load in early builds, some ID's just don't seem to work on the netemu (and possibly newemu) but experiment if you want too, i can walk you through it step by step if you need me too.

I think I'd need guidance for what you mean, yeah.

Not tonight. Well come back to that one. Tonight, I've been installing some full games. A couple of them are multi disc games (Gran Turismo 2 for example).

How is it you can change between discs? I see the option from pressing the PS button mid game, but it's not selectable, or when it is, it doesn't allow changing discs from whatever disc it's already running.

Sure no rush to test it, just message me when you want to try it and i will try and give you step by step instructions (if you haven't already figured out another way before then)

You can switch discs by using the "reset" option then selecting a disc, the other disc change option only appears when a proper disc swap screen appears (like in MGS for example when you reach the end of disc1)

The easiest way to override the game id is to create a file called GAME_ID in the same directory as the cue file.
This file should contain the replacement id to use instead of what the disc would normally identify as:
$ cat GAME_ID
SLUS00707

I have the physical disk for SLED01735 and it plays from the PS3 discdrive but it does not play as a PKG :-(
It does convert and play on PSP though.
Neither changing the gameid (I changed it to SLUS00707) nor forcing newemu can play the pkg so it is probably just not
compatible with the emulator and would need a ppf or a config to fix.

Interesting idea but i do mean rebuilding the game, i have tested on a demo i have and it works for me but yeah i can't say it will work on "all" demo's, it was just another idea to try, i sent you a PM @Ronnie Sahlberg with the info in it, it might help you discover why this method works for some games and not others maybe.

I can confirm this works.
I did is slightly different though. I did not unpack to iso, change the filename, then pack it back to iso.
I just ran a hexeditor on a copy of the bin file and replaced "SLED_017.35" with "SLES_015.14" and then it played.

Very interesting. So, the emulator in this case looks for the filename used in SYSTEM.CNF on the disk. How strange, it seems it would be much easier for it to just look in PARAM.SFO or in the PSISOIMG.... part of the EBOOT. Well, we learn something new every day.

Now I need to think about how to handle this in pop-fe.
I still want pop-fe to detect the disk as "demo cd" and use the proper demo cd cover for it and not to show up as the actual full game.
I will need to do some experiments on how/when I patch the disk image so that the game will play but it will still show up as the demo, i,.e. SLED01735 on the xmb.

EDIT: I wonder if it is the whole name or if it is sufficient to just convert SLED -> SLES.
I need to try that on silent hill demo.
I have a whole bunch of other SLED disks too (The Official UK Playstation Magazine) that I need to test too.
