PS3 Firmware 4.91 is now Live

The expected once a year firmware update has been executed by Sony, PS3 4.91 Firmware is now Live. While an expected update, could this bring other changes to the firmware? Likely not but its still early to conclude as this update is fresh as of writing .

Do not update, various exploits / tools / essential homebrew will need to be updated to support the latest firmware update of 4.91. See below for a short FAQ on 4.91, as there is always some confusions around the update process. .

  • HFW (method) & PS3HEN (code) are public/open source, so unofficial releases will appear, the quality can vary dramatically so its best to choose official release's, For PS3HEN its a PS3Xploit Team project (@esc0rtd3w and @Joonie). HFW was a creation of @Joonie with @Joonie or @littlebalup's supplying the official release's for PS3HEN.
    
  • CFW - In the current era of CFW, look no farther then @Evilnat for quality and features. but anyone can create a CFW, but Evilnat has had a long standing reputation that has been great in the PS3 Scene.
    
  • Ps3 Toolset: This is a closed source project, so you can only trust the official when it comes to quality and operating the way it was intended to be use. There have been imitations in the past but they have come with a great risk. Look for @bguerville support for 4.91 after CFW 4.91 is released.

Experimental 4.91 HFW has been released as posted here. Like you said it's useless without HEN itself but I think you might want to update your post just so impatient people can see that progress is being made.

Wololo's, understanding of the PS3 is not the greatest at times.

He is advising people to update to a HFW that the person has failed to make before and would not listen to people who built it. Yoti is an experience developer in other scene's but made mistakes before and did not listen to advise from devs who created it to fix the issue. Minor mistakes but it did have an impact with issue's when PS3HEN was officially released and a new HFW was needed. .I can see why Wololo would add it, but is premature.

Telling people to update to HFW when there is no PS3HEN updated. Just tells people to lose your jailbreak by updating to HFW with no PS3HEN.. Now to be fair, i do see @LuanTeles reporting hen is working, but does not mean its fully working.. Usually takes a few days for various scenarios to popup and more testing to conclude that.

Note that the Joonie version he links is not for 4.91 but rather is for 4.90. Also, he states this incorrectly

HFW can be used to install HEN (via BGToolset), or a CFW if your console is compatible with CFW.

bguerville's PS3 Toolset is nothing to do with PS3HEN.
You do not need it for PS3HEN..

 

Actually, no changes are needed on the hen, just for versioning purposes... the 4.89 build is running perfectly fine on 4.91, where 4.91 is essentially 4.89 (lv2 and vsh) with updated keys. The existing 4.89 package already fixes all issues with the 4.91 HFW; the same tar as 4.89 is compatible.

Does not mean everything is working as it should. You know its those little things that cause the most issues at times.

 

When is the hfw/cfw 4.91 firmware update available? Because I can't sign in psn unless I update it.

It'll be ready when it's ready. Please, don't ask for release dates.

Since I can't synch my trophies now, if I unlock a bunch of trophies on my Evilnat 4.90, will the update to 4.91 delete them? Or should I be fine to synch them afterwards?
I'm trophy collecting for some games and I don't want to waste time if they are removed :/

 

Jeez. People need to chill out and give it a week or two. Go play something else, or one of the many PS3 games that don't require online.

what about txt file that spoof firmware for me it worked at 4.88 when there was 4.90 firmware. If I not wrong it spoof to 9.99 so it *should* work.

auto update is only for ps plus users so no.

It won't work as Sony changed the authentication method on OFW 4.89+.

We have not seen it, but past reputation means there is issue's.
However that is assumptions, based on the past.

The official is being worked on by @esc0rtd3w . So that is the one we suggest.
Always best to get it from the people who create it and also respects the user's to give them the full picture.

I am also of those that updated yesterday and as a result the console refuses to load anymore. I had CFW, but don't know much about it since I recently got the console with CFW installed on it. What I get is the screen that says that there was an error loading the software and prompts me to install a fresh 4.91 with a flash drive.

My question is, eventually when the new CFW is written and released, will I be able to install it given my situation and save my installed games and everything or will I have to install a fresh original 4.91 and then do the whole jailbreaking again.

If your PS3 is asking for FW 4.91, it means your HDD data is corrupted or your drive got damaged.

The only way to recover your data (if possible) is to get the eID Root Key, but to do that you'll have to wait until CFW 4.91 is released in order to install it and retrieve it.

The ERK is unique to each console.

Best case here would be to keep safe your current HDD, use another one in your PS3 and install OFW 4.91. When CFW 4.91 is released, you can attempt to rescue your data.

I didn't check the link, I don't have time, I don't know who released it or whether it was successfully tested unofficially with some updated HEN fork, if not HOWEVER given all the worsening BS that HFWs create version after version with layouts and obsolete files, releasing experimental fw without ever having tested HEN on it (HEN which must be installed on top of HFW to fix all the obsolete files issues!) would probably be one of the most stupid things one could do IMHO.

i tried this on my system it didn't brick it, it sees HFW update it does its thing then it goes to install it but data corrupted message appears, it was worth a shot and thanks for sharing this

Let me see if I understand.

Option 1: Buy a 2.5 inch HDD, I see that it is a standard one, format it and install OFW 4.91 on it via a USB flash drive. Wait for CFW 4.91 and then do the whole jailbreaking process myself from scratch.

Option 2: Wait for CFW 4.91 and then attempt to rescue my current HDD. When you say "rescue" does that mean that I could connect a flash drive with the upcoming CFW 4.91 and then the console will install it being in this current state of not loading and this could potentially fix the problem? Is it that or something more complex as a data rescue process?
