PS3 Firmware 4.91 is now Live

The expected once a year firmware update has been executed by Sony, PS3 4.91 Firmware is now Live. While an expected update, could this bring other changes to the firmware? Likely not but its still early to conclude as this update is fresh as of writing .

Do not update, various exploits / tools / essential homebrew will need to be updated to support the latest firmware update of 4.91. See below for a short FAQ on 4.91, as there is always some confusions around the update process. .

  • NO, you will temporary lose your jailbreak (CFW or HEN) if you update to 4.91. (until projects are updated)

  • You will have to wait for developer's to update exploits and tools to support 4.91.
    • PS3HEN, will need two things to happen.
      • 1.) HFW (hybrid firmware) will need to be released (by itself, it's useless), so do not update to 4.91 HFW without PS3HEN 4.91 or you will essentially just be on 4.91 Official Firmware and stuck until solution for 4.91 are complete.     • You will not need to use bguerville's PS3 Toolset if updating from a 4.90 CFW to a 4.91 CFW directly. only would need to use the toolset if you updated to 4.91 Official Firmware.(or installed HFW)
  
  What are unofficial releases and can they be trusted?
  
  • HFW (method) & PS3HEN (code) are public/open source, so unofficial releases will appear, the quality can vary dramatically so its best to choose official release's, For PS3HEN its a PS3Xploit Team project (@esc0rtd3w and @Joonie). HFW was a creation of @Joonie with @Joonie or @littlebalup's supplying the official release's for PS3HEN.
    
  • CFW - In the current era of CFW, look no farther then @Evilnat for quality and features. but anyone can create a CFW, but Evilnat has had a long standing reputation that has been great in the PS3 Scene.
    
  • Ps3 Toolset: This is a closed source project, so you can only trust the official when it comes to quality and operating the way it was intended to be use. There have been imitations in the past but they have come with a great risk. Look for @bguerville support for 4.91 after CFW 4.91 is released.

Hey guys. I just found out about that forum by pure Google search. Nice thing you are having here.

I am also of those that updated yesterday and as a result the console refuses to load anymore. I had CFW, but don't know much about it since I recently got the console with CFW installed on it. What I get is the screen that says that there was an error loading the software and prompts me to install a fresh 4.91 with a flash drive.

My question is, eventually when the new CFW is written and released, will I be able to install it given my situation and save my installed games and everything or will I have to install a fresh original 4.91 and then do the whole jailbreaking again.

You already installed the firmware that is a OFW, it means you lost the jailbreak. You won't be able to install a CFW on the top of it, only HFW and OFW.

In order to flash a cfw again you'll need go be on OFW or HFW and use @bguerville's toolset. (Currently it doesn't support 4.91)

So, your solution is flash the ofw or the official hfw when released, then when Bgtoolset is ready, patch your system and go back to CFW, your data won't be affected by the process.

It's a known issue of using dynamic fan control on HEN, just set your fan to manual or syscon.

When you say "rescue" does that mean that I could connect a flash drive with the upcoming CFW 4.91 and then the console will install it being in this current state of not loading and this could potentially fix the problem? Is it that or something more complex as a data rescue process?

No, don't do this. If you put your current HDD in your console, it will be formated anyways.

What I said was, get another, temporary HDD and use it to install OFW 4.91. When CFW 4.91 is out, you can install it on the temporary HDD in order to retrieve the ERK.

Once you have the ERK, you can attempt to recover the data in your old HDD.

You contact me because you wanted me to check if the files in your.pkg are correct....

The only thing I asked you was which tar you used to see if it matched mine..

It's not a competition, nobody here will release Unofficial builds, the original team tests it under many circumstances to ensure everything is correct.

Joonie , Sc0 or any other known dev will release it when it's ready and after tests are made, no one cares if Unofficial builds will come first or not... nor most of the users, the majority will wait for the original team release.

And now i saw on a group you saying that I asked you how to build an HFW and aked some tips to inform the developers at psx-place? Come on, do you really think the original team doesn't know how to make one? Or will not make several checks in past firmwares to see the best match?

I also saw that you said me and the hen rus guys was using your findings to inform people as we were the ones that found that ( I wonder which ones) , just for your information @Yoti was the first one to build a Unofficial hfw, no one used any tip from you. (It also doesn't matter)

All you mentioned was that you were using the 4.89 pkg to restore the files because the
tar is the same. So i told you that you should check the offsets, because the vsh offsets are diferent from the 4.90...Then later, I told you that the vsh.self and lv2 are identical to 4.89 so the same offsets could be used and you said that you already know, NONE OF THIS INFO CAME FROM YOU nor the ones in any 4.91 thread, i was discussing the vsh changes way before at X as you can see and Evilnat that gave me the information here when i was comparing 4.90 and 4.91. That's it.

I have the PS3UPDAT.PUP file on my thumbdrive insterted into my PS3, but when i go to update, I can only choose the new 4.91 Software update option. Can anyone help me get around this 4.91 update wall to proceed with the HEN installation? much appreciated

Please, let's calm down. I'm just an apprentice and I don't want to take credit away from anyone. My participation is solely to assist. I remember when someone posted a tip that could work for building HFW 4.90. I decided to test it and make the necessary replacements of 2 webkit. The comment of that person went unnoticed, but I responded with a positive sign. Finally, the developers were able to take action and build the HFW alongside CFW 4.90. There's no need for competition.
