PS3 Backup booboo

So i did not make a backup of my system, but formatted the drive thinking for some reason that it would reinstall the system files when i reinstalled the HDD. It tells me i need to install the update for 4.88 or later. I have formatted a flash drive to fat32 and made a ps3 directory, and a update directory inside the ps3 one, and have downloaded and copied ofw 4.88 to the update directory. It isn't reading the update and keeps failing when i try to install it. brings me back to the screen telling me to insert a drive with system software 4.88 or hit ps button to restart. I don't know if there is a disk image somewhere that i can download and put on my hard drive but if so that would be ice. also i tried recovery mode and none of the options work. Any help or insight would be great.

it was mentioned in another thread that i posted a while back that it could be a problem with the BR drive. Does this make sense? and if it is the optical drive, is there an easy way to fix it?

Hello, i had same problem with updating the console using both 4.88-OFW/HFW, but it does keep showing that needs updating 4.88.
The trick is so simple, i've found the solution here, but didn't remember the post, anyway:

1- Once you push start + select at the same time, the screen change telling you that it's searching ...., at that same time the screen changed with that message pull off the PS3 PAD cable from the controller PAD.

2- It will find the firmware and decompile it, and show you message that it needs rebooting for completing the operation

3- Once rebooted another screen of finding things is shown, do the same thing at that time, pull off the PS3 controller PAD cable

4- You can plug it in back once you have the choice of accepting conditions message screen.

Good luck!

With broken (not connected/burned) BT/WiFi/ODD You cannot install any OFW and any CFW without patches for bypassing it. PS3 will display error code related exactly to those issues...

There is no universal disk image to be written for PS3 because it is impossible. Each retail PS3 using different keys for internal HDD encryption and different models using different logic (NOR models have additional partition with VFLASH; HDD with used OtherOS have additional partition with Linux). On top of that, partitions cannot be shrinking or resizing so it is last reason why someone else disk image cannot be used here.

I opened it up, and removed the ODD cleaned it all out and put it back together. Now it is letting me set it up from the recovery menu so i am happy about that. Now to downgrade and jailbreak it when it's done. Thanks for the input.

Do i have the same problem as @nathan vreeland? I have WiFi/BT/ODD working normally, every network adapter/BT Device/BR DVD is working as it should be.
But everytime, i want to flash with 4.88 OFW/HFW for my Super Slim, i have to disconnect the PAD from the console on each step on flashing like i wrote in my previous post, othewise it will show no firmware detected, you need to insert 4.88 ....etc
Do you have any idea?

@AncientRocks78 No it is different problem, otherwise You wouldn't able to update no matter what.

I heard few times similar issue as Yours but no one know what causing it. ;) Maybe it is related to powering up USB (which should be solved by active HUB if this is the case), or maybe some bugs on usb support by updater, or maybe something totally different.

Update: So it found the pup, and started installing it, and i walked away. when i came back screen was black. i switched cables and tvs, still black screen. on some advice i found on reddit i removed the hdd and re formatted it and reinstalled it and bam, picture is back but it didn't install the damn pup.

I maybe suspect power problem, as i've noticed that some direct power caming from the ports, aren't enought for devices to be working: i've to unplug and replug them again in order to be working , this comes to "USB-Stick (USB/HDD)", charging the PAD, USB-Headset and XBOX 360 wireless receiver. It comes some times but not too much, and when i've understood that, i realized that the other problem of multiMAN BlackScreen on boot cames from that problem if USB stick are connected, so i to remove everytime USB's connected on ports before loading multiMAN, and it not crash again, unless from time to time, but not always.

But, if power not enought from USB ports, how can a active HUB translate it to device.

I've just bought this Super Slim from a seller, and i suspect that the person who owned it, played a lot from External USB HD. I'm aware of that, i've a 11 month PS4 Pro bought completely new before the stock disappear from sellers, and i never play from External USB ports, only swapping games from Internal to External and vice versa, to avoid that power lost. I use it only for brief things exept for my USB Headset, which is almost connected, and i think it's not power hangry.

Any suggestion on how to solve that powering USB, or it's now reverted to motherboard, or only the chip that needs to be swapped by new one?

Active HUB taking power from outside, not from target device USB. Instead to passive HUB. That's why this should fix every issues caused by not enough power (until HUB itself is broken/faked and not giving i.e 5V on every port for USB 2.0 as it should). How this exactly works, ask the electronics engineer. ;)

The active HUB is what i have to search for, right now, it's the best, as the console was never been opened, the waranty sticker is just there and untouched. Will a HDD Docking station with USB port do the job of the active HUB, because i already have one? As i didn't find yet on the net an active USB HUB for PS3!
But maybe i have to take care of motherboard USB chip, and this is why i asked for a suggestion between active hub and hot air swapping the USB chip maybe!
I do not want to take that console for repairing, if i can do that by my own, just to take care of it!

So this has further regressed. I had to format the drive again. now when i go to power on, it starts with green light, then beeeps three times, then video cuts and ps3 has a blinking red light until i press power again. then the light goes steady red like when it's turned off. from what i read it is acting like it's overheating, but i opened it earlier today to F%$# with the ODD and it was pretty clean in there, and it does it even when the console has been off for hours.

Most probably is that the NECs on your RSX are failing. In this case the recommended step to follow is to run the Syscon diagnosis, or instead, put at least 4 or 8 tantalum capacitors in parallel with the NECs (don't touch the NECs yet). If the piggyback works and console doesn't turn off anymore, then you can procede to see if the console is brick due a firmware installation interruption, wich it could be.

These 20xx series run fine, except for that little aspect..
