PS3HEN PS3 CECHB00 HEN3.0.1 CPU

Recently I got a PS3 PS3 CECHB00 from a seller who claimed the set is not working with YLOD/RLOD. Took home, turn on and it turns power up fine. Changed out HDD and I flashed it with 4.86 HFW. I started to copy files over to the PS3 and notice I got frequent CPU high temp warning (81 deg C). I took apart and apply new thermal grease on the CPU and RSX unit. To check, I ran webman idle just to observe the temperature and it doesn't appear to improve. Attached the image of the temp.

Would like to check if the Tokin capacitor is dying (as the guy who sold me mentioned YLOD/RLOD) will it cause the current supply to be unstable and cause high temperatures? What should I do to address the issue? Thanks.

I have been checking on this forum for awhile and today's my first post. Thanks for this forums, I got my slim on HEN~~~~

I wanted PS2 compatibility, so I got this Phat.

A faulty capacitor cant be the cause of overheats, most probably the problem is in the thermal paste under CELL IHS

OK. Thanks for the reply. So... your suggestion would be to delid? I also found one of the 25v 47uf capacitor have a piece cracked off.

you should also check out cfw. hen is not for phat models.
After patching with bguerville toolset, can flash directly with CFW, right? Which one would be good. Purpose is mainly PS1 and PS2 games. Thanks.

Any other suggestions on the CPU temp higher than RSX by 10Deg C? Just tested The last of us "underground tunnel" shutdown with blinking red light after 5mins of playing. Thanks.!

after using toolset, reboot then install cfw pup. rebug cfw is good.

did you change paste? are you using webman mod (or other fan control)?

I have faced the problem before and solved the problem switching thermal putty

I think its a good idea to fix the overheating issue first before doing something else. good decision there OP. Just cant imagine what will happen if in the middle of the upgrade process and PS3 decides to shutdown it self during the upgrade process (due to overheating), the scary part is if it decides to shutdown during bgtoolset patching.

now for the main issue, you definetly need to delid the Cell unfortunately. this is become more like a mandatory thing to do on old console (more likely need to be done on all fat consoles).

I used webman to set the auto #2. and yup, I applied new silicone paste. Thanks.
are your temps closer together now? or is one still much higher?

BTW according to your screenshot above your ps3 is barely used. only 436 hours run time and only 397 times turned on. the (45) means it wasnt shutdown properly 45 times.

Thanks everyone for the reply! I think most mentioned delid as the solution. My CPU is still way higher, more than 10deg C than the RSX...

There is usually some slight discrepancies in temps between RSX and Cell, but it's usually the other way around. The RSX usually runs a few degrees hotter.

The strange thing is that this model has seen very little use. 18 days powered on time is practically nothing compared to the 300+ days a typical console of this age would see.
Such a large heat discrepancy definitely has something to do with the thermal paste under the IHS (most likely dried out).

A delid seems to be the one here.

Now that you are the second person to mention the low usage, I think I am a lucky guy. Hahaha. Need to delid shall be. I have 2 phats to practice on. Hopefully I don't screw up the delid for the precious CECHB00. Just gotten a CECHA06 today. RLOD.... Wonder if tokin replacement can solve the problem. Finger crossed. Will post here later

Check youtube for tutorials videos. Go slowly, the chip dies are very sensitive. Unfortunately, the Cell IHS is the harder of the 2 to remove, there is a run of thermal compound around the edge of the IHS that's a pig to get loose.

Cell chip delided for thermal compound reference

As you can see, there is a small gap at the bottom of the chip. You need to start there, work your way around slowly, scraping your shim tool along that line of compound

This guys used a razor. So... Which tool is recommended? Razer is OK? Thanks.

Any solid tool that's thin. I think most people use metal spudgers. Better angled and handle for good grip.

Something like this:

Obviously, a Stanley blade will work. But how easy that will be compared to a spudge tool, I do not know

These are the tools I have. Can the ones on the left be use?
