Ps3 Fat CECHC03 maintenance

Hi all,

So I scored myself a non-working backwards comparable ps3, it didn't work at all, no power. This unit had never been opened, I managed to identify it was the power source, and replaced with a spare ps-227, it fired up!

Now that it's actually working I quickly shut it down! it's fairly dusty, and in need of tlc, there's lots of guides on YouTube on how to maintain, I just want to be sure I'm doing it justice. And not doing something I shouldn't!!

im fine with the cleaning case and boards (99% isop alc) and then re-paste with mx4, already has the 19 blade fan, paste is totally dry as expected having cracked the warranty seal myself…but should I be de-lidding? Is it necessary? Nervous I could kill it, although fairly handy at the delicate stuff including having modded an rgh3 Xbox !

Very interested in peoples opinions on should I keep it stock 60gb to play discs including ps2 or CFW mod it add a 1tb disc, at least to manage the fan speeds a bit higher and try to preserve this?

in a side note…
I already have two others for spares both with yellow lights and would happily spend some time troubleshooting those, but is there any detailed guides out there to follow?

Thanks for your help and advice!

I was so pleased to land one having over 200 physical ps2 games and 100+ ps3 it'll be great to have this around!

I would advice against doing any sort of deliding work if you don't have the expertise nor the tools. A tiny mistake or bad move could render your console totally useless.

In my opinion, you should first try cleaning it up completely and then put new good quality thermal paste and see how it goes. Also, you should put some CFW on it and install WebMAN MOD so the console handles its temperatures correctly.

Another must for CFW is to retrieve the eID root key. This key alloes you to read your PS3's HDD from your PC.

Regarding your HDD upgrade, there is no need to be on CFW to change it. The only requirement is to have the current FW PUP in a USB drive in order to reinstall everything.

Ok thanks! I ordered some artic mx4 as seems what most suggest, I will also replace the thermal heat pads with new 1.5-2mm as several look a little broken/brittle…I won't delid

I'll have installed cfw on a slim before, both webman and multi man options, using FileZilla to transfer files over ftp….but could you give me an overview of what the eID root is used for? Maybe I missed a step!

The eID root key is good to have in case of your console breaking for whatever reason, and not having a backup of your game licences, savegames and all your data. It's just for that.
