PS3 HDD SWAP

Hi guys

I know the question has been asked multipul time about swapping HDD on a ps3 but I have another one.

Been working on my friends PS3 for a little while... Its a 3003b so is now running HFW and has HEN installed.
There is a large amount of data on this PS3 and i have been taking his collection of PS2 games and converting them to PKG files and installing them on the HDD.

NOW he wants the HDD upgrading to a 1TB, fair enough! But is there away I can "Clone" the internal 320gb and copy it to a 1TB, so i can basicly swap the HDD and not have to start all over again!

There is no way to clone PS3 HDD from smaller storage to larger not been limited by size of smaller (>> sector by sector copy).

So You have two painful ways:
  1. Using System Backup Utility (search forum about it's limitations)
  2. Copying interesting data back and forth by file manager:
from:
  • a. reading PS3HDD on PC (not on Your model as You cannot retrieve ERK)
  • b. sending data via FTP
  • c. copying data to USB (FAT32 limiation)

to: FTP/USB via file manager + rebuild database

When you say coping interesting data... Can i strip the installed ps2 games or am.i going to have to do the pain staking job of converting the ps2 disc again?

Ive been reading about a program called AOMEI or something like that. Supposedly it can clone the whole drive by putting both old and new in a pc?

you can clone the drive in that and many other programs if you use sector by sector copy (bit perfect,or various other naming but it's essentially the same thing) and it will work but you'll lose added capacity of larger drive.for example if you sector copy a 160gb drive to a 500gb one it will work but ps3 will read the drive still as a 160gb one and nothing you can do about it.

problem is that ps3 hdd is encrypted and in proprietary format and you can't simply open it,read it or manipulate with it under any OS.

You can simple copy "dev_hdd0/game/<your game>/" and after restoration, do rebuild database to make them show up. No package creating is obligatory (it was never be, except application with filemanager build-in or providing FTP server).

I wrote already that cloning will NOT work for You, as internal mass storage is encrypted so no PC applications which are designed to HDD operations are work on it. It is possible only sector by sector copy of course but You will not get back additional free space as this will be cloned old, smaller HDD.

and you can't simply open it,read it or manipulate with it under any OS.

That's not fully true but in his case it is without EID Root Key extracted.

that's why i wrote especially to him.i know that on cfw you can dump eid root key and then open it on windows and you can read and copy the files.

I get the encryption part of a ps3 and now fully understand about cloning doimg exactly that "cloning the hdd" and so losimg and additonal space.
So.... Tha k beinh said and i'm really sorry to sound like a pro noob but when coping the dev_hdd0/game/<your game>/ folders, should I do that to an external.HDD plugged into the ps3? Onced copied swap the drives, paste back over and then rebuild the database?

Thanks for your help as well guys!

There is no need to apologize for seeking knowledge (it doesn't matter if You asking how to calculate 2+2 or ask how to calculate escape velocity and speed from the Earth ;)). Apologize must those who doesn't want to learn, doesn't interesting anything but simultaneously they demand from us solve their problems. That's the kind of people which should be separated from normal ones. Anyway:

External HDD, pendrive, memory card, whatever fit You well.

No. That's not so fast. ;) If You put empty HDD (as internal of course), then console ask to format it, You need provide fw on USB device, then You must hack console again, and after that You will be able to restore Your contents. It is time consuming, indeed. I don't using HEN so I don't know if You are able to put HFW or goes through OFW>>HFW again.

I do agree that thses fourms have tought me so much from simple thinks the ps3xploit reight through to saving a vonsle using my E3.
The developers on here spend there spear time helping people and the least us beginners can do is show respect and at least learn what happens when we do certain mods or what a step in the process is there.... Thats the only way we get better, and we all have to start somehwere.

Ok I got this.... I think, to break this down simply

1 - connect external drive to PC (Fat32 format) and copy the dev_hdd0/game/<your game>/ files VIA FTP because some of files will be too large to just copy.

2 - put new 1tb into ps3, let it formate it and themln reinstall OFW 4.84

3 - install HWF 4.84 again followed by HAN/HEN/MM/WEBMAN Etc Etc...

4 - copy all the data back from external via FTP again

5 - rebuild database.

Last question..... When in Multiman for the FTP, would i need to enable write mode?

FAT32 have 4GiB file limitation so in theory FTP is better (You don't need external drive in this case, ;) just transfer to PC directly). But it is unstable if You want send maaaaaany files (at least in my case, not everyone experiencing such freezing problems).

Try reinstall HFW if this is the same console and it was already installed before. This spare You some time.

No. Write mode is for dev_blind/dev_writable, which is literally mounting FLASH not as read only but also with write privileges. You don't need write anything there (and BTW: if You mess up something with Your files on flash == semi or even perm brick).

Thanks @Berion
I figured as much with the dev_blind option as i have only used that when dealing with writing things to what is effectively the registory of the ps3 (cold boot screens, waves etc)

Ill be working from a laptop unfortunately so gonna have to go the external caddy (or doing half the hdd at a time )

Really need to fix my pc haha.

you can use external ntfs usb drive, then you won't be limited with 4gb fat32 limitation.also,if you won't be using the pc,there no reason to ftp the files, you can use any file manager with nfts support (one in IRISMAN would be most convenient in my opinion) and you don't have to deal with ftp stability, fillezilla options etc.

Once check out the HEN tool box by devil. It has the back up all option , I have not tested but try it if you wanted to.

Actually I have the same situation once recently and I have used the ps3 inbuilt backup utility to clone/backup full HDD to a fat32 formatted external hard disk. I have then swapped new HDD (since its NOR , need to install HFW 4.84 after swapping new HDD) and restored the backup.
Simple , my hard disk is upgraded and all my data is safe.
