Well sir you are in for a treat. You not only can use CFW but you have the only model that can still fully function if the BD drive ever dies. So no worries about using patched firmwares nor getting stuck in a update loop.
So since you are new to modding here is what I suggest. Read the written guides 2-3 times, but if you need a bit more visual use a YouTube guide to follow along as you read. Much like carpentry measure multiple ties as you can only cut once.
I saw guides as even the best YouTubers can miss a detail here and there that may not pertain to them but does for you. There is a ton of great guides but I highly suggest the one here.
@Coro did a knock out job for sure.

If you need a video I suggest the visual aid of
@MrMario2011 not just for PS3 but a ton of systems. Recently did a Xecuter 3 CE mod to a special edition Xbox. Was a great refresher but here is his video
It is 99% safe as long as you follow the info provided. That being said the other 1% is power failure so don't fret. Since you have a slim (NOR flash) it is forgiving about softbricks unlike the older NAND based systems. One fuss up there you need a flasher. Most bricks on slims can be fixed rather easily so long as CoreOS was written to the internal NOR flash.
Here is a couple other quick tips for you. Install the latest original firmware TWICE and I prefer to do it from recovery menu. It will help you avoid some ROS0/1 errors pyChecker could give you.
That leads me to the next part. You will 100% need an official controller in recovery or God forbid you need it service mode. Some clones work others do not. It is a gamble so try to stick with OEM.
Once running custom firmware do your self a favor and enable QA flagging with your system. Once you have enabled QA flags google QA flag button combo. Then you will get some new settings. Enable System Update Debug as it will allow you to easily downgrade if need be but also offers a layer of brick protection.
If using EvilNat 4.88.2 it is fairly easy in the CFW Toolbox. This will be the firmware you want if you care for online play. It isn't 100% safe but much safer then spoofing older firmwares to regain access.
Sony changed some things so the devs don't feel it is safe so they do not release the tools so do not do it manually. The only other you may use is Rebug 4.84.2 REX as you can swap easily from a standard system to a PS3 Debug unit.
If you need anything else please feel free to DM me.
