PS3 stuck at "The system was not turned off properly"

Hello all.

I have been using HEN 2.2.2 on HFW 4.84 for half a year without problems. The only homebrew installed is IRISMAN and only for copying files to the PS3, nothing else and no ISO of games.

Today a game from disc got stuck frozen and all controllers were unresponsive, so the only thing we could do is shut down the PS3 by long pressing the power button.

When we turned it on again, it is now always showing the "The system was not turned off properly" screen. It tries to restore, takes a minute, then shows the same message again.

Should I try to start the PS3 to recovery mode and reinstall HFW 4.84 from USB? Will we lose our files and gamesaves? Is there something else we should try first, to avoid reinstalling the HFW?

Thanks for helping.

my guess is that there's something wrong with the hard drive. unfortunately, there's no way to read the hdd on a computer without the eid root key, so if it's about to fail... I don't know if this is possible with hen, but one of the debug settings (can't recall if it's qa flagging) removes the improper shutdown warning. you won't lose your games or saves by reinstalling the firmware. however, if that doesn't work, then I'd say try another hdd.

I have in mind to try the following, in order until one of them works:

- Recovery Mode > Restore File System
- Recovery Mode > Rebuild Database
- Recovery Mode > System Update > Re-Install HFW from USB
- Recovery Mode > Restore PS3 System (does this reformat the hdd?)

If none of these work, time to buy a new PS3...

That is a good order to try them in, the restore ps3 system option will format the hdd so save that as a last resort.

Thanks to both of you!

Restoring File System and Rebuilding Database didn't help, but Reinstalling HFW solved the problem, at least for now :)
