What PS3 console are you working with? Also official PS3 controller is needed for firmware installation.

Yea so I couldn't use a ps4 controller
The fat old classic one that's backwards compatible

Would reinstalling the fw fix the problem I'm having

I have a few generic ps3 controllers that do work in recovery. They have the P3 on the PS button instead of PS logo.
Interesting every single one I bought never worked or there was always some kind of problems. But you never know I will be looking for one now! Lol. Everyone has always suggested to use official PS3 controller controller. I always had problems so I was assuming this was ultimately true. Great to learn something new!!:sfun oldguy:

Hard to say if it would fix the problem. It's just a trouble shooting step in fixing problems like yours. Sometimes hard drive may need formatted on PC. or your hard drive is on its way out. :sfun oldguy:
Depending on what console you have some of the FW is on hard drive.

Some good quality controllers that mimic Sony's drivers work just fine, while cheap ones usually don't work in Recovery Mode, although nowadays, many of them do.

k im mainly wondering if it will restore the PlayStation system to the device because i moved some files from the ps3 that seemed maybe important to my installed 700gb hdd because i thought i wouldn't lose or use the hdd for anything else but low & be hold i used it not knowing it was my ps3 hdd because my girl & i installed windows on it but anyways i no longer have those files or p3 system files will reinstalling the fw to the PlayStation fix even though those files got put on that drive

Format your drive on your PC, put in PS3 it should tell you to install FW.

cant i just use the internal 80gbs

& will it actually fix it even though i moved those files

False. You need to use tools (a normal Phillips screwdriver and some plastic triangle or even your fingernail) in order to remove the HDD from the console.

Look, if you want help, put some work on it. @Yugonibblit asked you many times which PS3 model do you have, which is a basic piece of information to start diagnosing your problem. Then, read the PS3 user's manual or watch some YouTube videos on how to remove your console's HDD.

No it's the embedded one to the mobo & i tried putting a ps3 game in and it didn't want to read it
It's like the very 1st fat old backwards compatible ps3s

No HDD anit embedded into no mobo no where.
It seems like you misunderstood HDD with something else.
Your console needs to boot up xmb before starting to read a disk, a USB hard drive, or whatever.
