make sure it is FAT32 with MBR (not GPT). THIS formatting tool for windows may help.

Just try the NOR path anyway. Even if the flash type is wrong you can't brick, because the NOR device ID won't be valid for your console, so no patch will be written. If the NOR dump checks out, your console is a NOR. I guess there's a small possibility your PS3 shell isn't original. Worth trying.

It's for sure MBR fat32 drive. I used the samsung FIT to flash to 4.90 Hybrid and also flashed in recovery mode.
When I hit NOR path - same thing insta freeze/lockup.
This PS3 I have is very old and single owner as well. Only thing I did to it was upgrade the internal disk. Could the internal disk be causing some kind of issue?

unplug any usb hubs, usb keyboards, usb headphones, usb fans, usb phone chargers, and any other usb devices except one memory stick (and controller if wired). try again.
you can try another hard drive but i doubt it is the issue. the ps3 will format any drive you give it, but the old drive will not be formatted when you put it back in.

Thanks for the info - it's good then that we enforced flash dumping first, because there's a chance you could've crashed the console when patching flash with that memory card inserted, which would be very bad. It's something I didn't anticipate but it seems to be for the best. There must be a weird issue occuring when multiple devices are connected to the ports.

It would be a shame if you don't put CFW on that model.
The flash writer is as safe as it can, but if something goes wrong with it, remember that it was your decision.
IIRC there were some reports of bgtoolset having problems if memory cards were left inserted or virtual ps1/ps2 memory cards left mounted. nobody could/would confirm by installing ofw and flashing again. they just installed cfw and stopped posting.
As safe as any other console. Just make sure you don't do anything foolish like flashing it when there's a thunderstorm outside, when the risk of losing power during the process is higher.
hi i updated to hen 4.90.1 on a different ssd not thinking when i had cfw evilnat 4.90 installed on my main ssd. now i keep getting file corrupt with either ssd or a reformatted ssd from my ps3. and i get file corrupt if i try and install ofw 4.90 or cfw evilnat 4.90. but if i use hfw 4.90.1 it installs every time. i have hen installed now im trying to get the flash writer 4.90 on my ps3 browser but it won't load. im using xampp and a tutorial i watched on youtube. but i can access the flash writer using my pc only. i tried my phone my laptop and it wont load any help would be appreciated. im trying to get back to evilnat 4.90. i even tried rebug firmware.

if hfw was the last thing installed, you need to use the writer or bgtoolset again.
i been trying to use the writer using xampp to host it but my ps3 wont load it on the internet browser for some reason and i cant use bgtoolset can i unless i have cfw installed?
bgtoolset does not need cfw. it helps you get cfw.

Hello all this is my first time trying to jailbreak my cecha01 ps3 currently on 4.90 but when I got to installing HFW 4.90.1 via USB it says no applicable update was found and I've made sure that it was in fat 32 and in the right folders ( PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP ), I've also tried 3 different USB Drives (32gb, 32gb and 16gb), I put it in the far right USB (4 USB ports) and every other USB port, and with and without the controller plugged into the USB port.
use recovery mode. also make sure usb is MBR, not GPT.

Thank-you for helping me i now have my ps3 jailbroke (had to use recovery mode for all steps lol)
