Hello everyone!

I currently have a slim model 2501A, and I have the back up of my old 2101 slim model, and i was wondering if it is possible to use all the content my old back up in my slim 2501 model, things like my saves, and games, etc.

I have the dump.hex of both consoles.

I'm sorry if this has been asked before, as what I found around didn't help me much.

Thank you and happy new year everyone.

Happy new year!

Isn't the dump.hex you're talking about just a dump of the PS3's firmware? (if it's that 16MB or so file or, in any case, a small file, then it can't contain your games for sure).

I'm not certain, but I think saves and games are stored on your hard drive (assuming you had backed up games on your hard drive) and I also think trophies and saves are stored on the hard drive. So, if you ask me, you can probably just move the drive from your old console in the new one, but please wait for confirmation.

EDIT: Actually, I don't think you can do any harm by moving the hard drive. Just make sure not to format it if asked, though I guess that shouldn't happen.

@PhantomR
Thanks for the reply.

I have the dump.hex from both consoles as well as the backup made by the PS3(2101) (I should of worded that better). I do not have the other console sadly or its hdd.
So I guess being able to access the content of the back up is what I'm after.
using alddos's tools i was able to obtain the IDPS of the 2501 dump.

If you mean a back up made with FTP or a file manager then you can just copy it back to dev_hdd0 and rebuild the database. Most stuff will work fine but you would need to reactivate and fix all your licenses.

If you mean a backup made with the system backup utility it is fairly useless for another console.

You might be able to extract some stuff from it on PC.

@DeViL303
yes exactly that "If you mean a backup made with the system backup utility it is fairly useless for another console."

oh well it was worth a try, I'll just start over again.

thank you @DeViL303 & @PhantomR for the responses.

If you have the IDPS from the old console, I think you can extract stuff from the backup, for example save data.

I've never used it nor do I know how it works or how dangerous it is but @aldostools ps3tools has a tool called ps3_hdd_gui which is supposed to be a windows based HDD reader for PS3 envrypted HDDs. Here's what the readme says:

PS3 HDD Reader for Windows, ver. 1.0, free no (c)

This tool can read and dump file(s)/folder(s) from a ps3_hdd. It need
a per-console key-file called "eid_root_key" to decrypt the ps3_hdd.
Search the net for infos about this key and how you can obtain him.

usage: ps3 <source> <volume> <command> <path>

source: hdd (reading from a ps3_hdd.)
file (reading from a byte-exact backup_file of a ps3_hdd.
backup must called "backup.bin" and be in program-folder.
NO support for backups created with the "PS3 Backup Utility"!)

volume: dev_hdd0, dev_hdd1 (NAND console),
dev_hdd0, dev_hdd1, dev_flash, dev_flash2, dev_flash3 (NOR console)

command: dir or ls (show the content of a directory)
copy or cp (copy file(s)/folder(s) to program-folder)

path: path to show or copy (all paths must begin in root)
(if your path contain spaces, put double quotes around the path)

You may be able to use that. I'd try to fish for more info on dangers and usage personally.

Edit: There's also a tool called ps3xport_tool that can extract files from a ps3 created backup.

Forgive me I misread what you were trying to achieve lol, My information is probably useless to you and doesn't answer your question. Sorry. well except for the ps3xprt_tool part of what I said. You can use that to extract the files from your back up and then FTP them over like @DeViL303 mentioned.

If You have flash dump from the console on which backup was made, You can retrieve IDPS from it, and then unpack System Useless Pseudo-Backup archives and restore everything (except trophies because there are no trophies there as I remember).

For use HDD Reader (which is read only tool) or Linux solution, You need EID Root Key which cannot be retrieve from flash dump (actually You can, but only if You know how to decrypt meta loader outside PS3, which no one know ;p).

If you have the IDPS from the old console, I think you can extract stuff from the backup, for example save data.
I was able to get some of my saves, thx.

Thats where I got it from with Alddo's tools

if you move a ps3 hdd to a different ps3, it will get formatted by the new ps3.
that is true.
