PS3 Question about data recovery

Hi guys, new here,

I am of the guys that installed the 4.91 update without knowing I shouldn't, so I lost the jailbreak.

What I did today is to use another HDD and installed again CFW. It works fine, I however still have my old HDD which I was hoping to be able to get the games from or somehow plug it in and work. My question is, is this possible to do and is it a good or a terrible idea to put back my old HDD on the freshly CFWed console?

I've been told about something called ERK (EID root key) and that somehow I may be able to obtain this and in recover my data from the old hard drive, but I can't seem to find anywhere info on how to do that.

Could anyone please advise?

First of all try just connecting the HDD to your PS3 like Berion said and see if it works. If it does and you have CFW (or HEN) just pull the files off of it using FTP. That's the easiest method. Of course, if the PS3 prompts you to format / initialize the drive make sure you decline if you don't want it to erase the entire drive.
You can dump the ERK using the ★Custom Firmware Tools menu. It's under dump tools. Have a FAT32 formatted USB disk when you select this option and it'll save the ERK to a file on the root of the drive. This is something you want to do even if the old drive does work. Keep the ERK backed up on your computer and a cloud drive. If the PS3 ever dies on you without warning the ERK would be required to salvage your data.
After getting the ERK, and if putting your old HDD back in the PS3 did not work, connect the HDD to your computer (using a SATA to USB adapter will spare you the need to open your computer's case but you can open the case if you don't have an adapter), then use the following tool to read it:

You can also use the tool that Berion referred to, which would also allow you to write to the drive, but it's more difficult to use and only runs on Linux.
