Question about OtherOS on 4.90

Basically, on my PS3 on 4.90 (evilnat, CEX) I want to put OtherOS on a USB drive. In the CFW options, theres an OtherOS section that lists a few things (specifically resizing VFLASH/eFlash and installing petitboot.)

If I want to use an external drive for Linux, can I use those options without restoring/resetting my PS3?

Sorry if I posted this in the wrong place.

installing linux to internal hdd requires special pup install and formatting. installing to usb storage device does not require those things. i only recommend installing to usb actually because it is so much easier. you can use a live cd/dvd to install or just test, if you want to.

I want to do it on a USB, yeah.

My question rn is if the options I'm talking are enough to enable that (from the PS3, anyways.)

resize then petitboot, yes. make sure you use the correct version for your model (nor/nand).

good luck!

Alright, cool! So if I do it on the USB and use those options, I wouldn't need to restore, right?
Also, to flash Linux onto the USB (full install, not a live instance) how would that work?

no restore. no internal hdd format.

you can use a live cd/dvd and install to usb from there. after installing, the burnt disc would not be needed anymore (unless you need to reinstall in the future).

update: i got everything to work and imaged Fedora 12 PPC to a DVD-R. It booted fine, going to install to an external HDD tomorrow.

Fedora 12, as in from 2009?!? Why on Earth do you want something SO ancient? T2 is still in active development for PS3 and just last month had performance boosting patches for it. Also Debian 12 works. Why would you run something so ancient and awful with no optimizations?

Just FYI, OtherOS is two factor stuff: the bootloader (placed mandatory in VFLASH/eFlash) + separated environment (as partition on HDD or outside, eg. on USB):

Doesnt Evilnats Firmware have the patches to format the hdd for otheros? It definitely had them on 4.89 or 4.90 (its been a while i did something with my ps3)
