PS3 Question about SACD playback and ripping on the PS3 CECHA00

Hello, I'm a new member here and I don't have much technical knowledge.
The post is quite long, so it may be a bit inconvenient to read. Thank you for your understanding.

I purchased a CECHA00 Japan model with Firmware 3.55 for SACD Player and ripping.
I updated it to Rebug 3.55.4 REX CFW, and I have SACD Ripper 0.36 and Rebug Toolbox 02.02.09 installed.
In Rebug Toolbox, I only enabled the QA Flag as a precaution and didn't change anything else.

The PS3 recognizes SACDs, but when I try to play them, I get the error code '80029bc1' and playback doesn't start.
SACD Ripper works normally and successfully rips the disc to ISO.

To determine whether the issue is hardware‑related or firmware‑related, I tried several things and What I've found so far is this:

With CFW 3.55.x, SACD ripping is possible, but playback is not.
And the firmware is old, it can no longer connect to the PSN servers, so time synchronization and internet access are not available.
With CFW 4.84.2, SACD ripping is not possible (ripper v0.36), but playback works.
And It can connect to the PSN servers, so time synchronization and internet access work, and Blu‑ray discs play normally because the decryption keys can be authenticated over the internet.

Through all the tests I've done so far, I've confirmed that there is no hardware issue.
However, I still can't determine whether SACD playback failure on CFW 3.55.x is caused by the firmware itself or by the lack of internet connectivity.
Likewise, I don't know whether the inability to rip SACDs on CFW 4.84.2 and above is due to the firmware or because SACD Ripper(v0.36) is not compatible.
Without specialized knowledge, it's difficult for me to figure out the cause of this problem.

Has anyone experienced this issue?

If anyone has solved this issue, I would really appreciate it if you could share the method.
I want to use my PS3 as both an SACD player and an SACD ripper.
Thank you.

These are the tests and attempts I have carried out so far.

CFW REBUG 3.55.1
CFW REBUG 3.55.2
CFW REBUG 3.55.4 REX
• SACD is recognized, but cannot be played(80029bc1)
• Hybrid CD: SACD layer is recognized, but cannot be played(80029bc1)
• Hybrid CD: CD layer is recognized and can be played
• CD is recognized and can be played
• DVD is recognized but cannot be played (region code)
• Blu‑ray disc is recognized but cannot be played (requires decryption key)
• PS1 disc is recognized and can be launched
• Time synchronization fails (80710A06)
• Cannot connect to the internet
• SACD Ripper 0.36 runs normally and can extract ISO
CFW REBUG 4.84.2 REX
• SACD is recognized and can be played
• Hybrid CD: SACD layer is recognized and can be played
• Hybrid CD: CD layer is recognized and can be played
• CD is recognized and can be played
• DVD is recognized but cannot be played (region code)
• Blu‑ray disc is recognized and can be played
• PS1 disc is recognized and can be launched
• Time synchronization works.
• Internet connection works
• SACD Ripper SACD 0.36 cannot be launched (when executed, the screen goes black for a moment and then returns to the XMB)

Thank you.

You don't need to log in to SEN to synchronize RTC. On PS4 You must, on PS3 AFIAR not.

QA Flag is one thing but also dump NAND flash and EID Root Key while you still can.

It means that some patches Rebug applies conflicting. Probably can be solved by turning off/on some settings in Rebug Toolbox but don't do that blindly. ;]

In theory you can stay on OFW 3.55 for both playing and ripping SACD but you will need resign PKGs and EBOOTs of file manager (eg. multiMAN) and SACD Ripper as old GeoHot method. Then these will work on OFW 3.55 (only these or older). IF I'm correct.

Thank you for your detailed explanation.
read your post, but the method you explained is difficult for a beginner like me to understand and apply.
I'm sorry about that.

While searching forums, I found a post titled "[Tutorial] multiMAN v04.81.xx & SACD Ripper" (https://www.psx-place.com/threads/tutorial-multiman-v04-81-xx-sacd-ripper.12302/).
According to the discussion, a developer participating in the forum successfully enabled SACD recognition and playback from the XMB, as well as ripping using the modified version of SACD Ripper v0.38 on CFW REBUG 4.81.2.
However, it has been difficult for me to find the package information and files, and I also had trouble understanding the conversations between the developers.

And now, My current PS3 setup is:
• CFW REBUG 3.55.4 REX
• System Mode – REBUG
• XMB Operation Mode – Retail
At the moment, SACD playback does not work, and I can only rip SACDs using the ripper (v0.36).

Although it's difficult for me to search for and understand technical information, I still hope to find a way to enable both SACD playback and ripping at the same time.
If anyone has solved this issue, I kindly ask once again for guidance.
Thank you for your interest.

AFAIK SACD is only available in the CEX kernel, not DEX
Thank you for your reply.
In my system information, it shows LV2 Kernel: CEX and Target Type: CEX — is this what you were referring to?
Do I need to change anything else?

I tested several additional CFW versions, and here is what I confirmed:

With CFW 3.55.x, SACD ripping is possible but playback is not.
Starting from CFW 4.82.x and later, SACD playback is possible but ripping is not.

After reverting to OFW 3.55 through recovery mode and testing SACD playback, I found that SACDs play normally.
This suggests that some patch applied in CFW 3.55.x modifies certain system settings, allowing SACD ripping but restricting SACD playback.
From the 4.xx.x versions onward, it seems that the patch required for ripping is no longer applied, so playback works but ripping is blocked.

If your goal is to use the PS3 for SACD playback and all general functions, EVILNAT 4.92.2 appears to be the best option.
If your goal is SACD ripping, then REBUG 3.55.x seems to be the most suitable choice.
Thank you for your interest.

Not system settings but system itself by patches applied to memory or data.

Try that PKG on latest CFW:

@Evilnat Could you know maybe which patches are disputable? Or if SACD could be just resigned for newer fw and will work?

@Berion
Sorry for the late reply.

Today I reinstalled Evilnat 4.92.2 through recovery mode and installed the SACD Ripper from the link you provided.
As a result, SACD playback, ripping, and all other media functions are working perfectly on my system!
On top of that, it can rip SACDs flawlessly even without the authentication key that the ripper normally asks for during the initial setup.

I truly appreciate your kindness in helping a new member like me and sharing the solution. I'd also like to thank the developers who modified the ripper program to make this possible.

You're welcome and thanks for the report. Not many people out there left with working PS3 with SACD chip and with SACDs at all. ^^
