PS3 Questions on CFW and HEN jailbreak

Hi everyone,

I would like to jailbreak two of mine ps3 and I'm totally new to this kind of thing.

The models are:

PS3 Slim CECH-2004B
Date Code: 0A
Firmware: 4.89

and

PS3 Super Slim CECH-4204A
Date Code: 3C
Firmware: 4.80

I would like to install the CFW on the CECH-2004B and HEN on the CECH-4204A.

So my questions are:

1) Is my CECH-2004B model compatible with CFW ?
2) Should I update both console before jailbreak it ? Or is it better to jailbreak it with the current firmware installed (4.89 for slim and 4.80 for super slim) ?
3) Can you post me the most updated guide to jailbreak with CFW and HEN with 4.90 firmware ?

Thank you

1. Yes
2. No.
For CFW ps3toolset.com can jailbreak PS3 from 4.75 to 4.90.
For HEN ps3xploit.me can install HEN from 4.80 to 4.90
If you need to access PSN or play recent Blu-ray discs on HEN, you should first update to HFW 4.90

For CFW you can update to 4.90 Evilnat after jailbreak. Enable QA flags from CFW tools menu if yo need to downgrade to any other cfw version supported by your system.

3. Go to YouTube and search for MrMario2011 tutorials

Hi, thanks for the reply.

To understand better, why do you suggest to jailbreak directly with the old firmware without updating them considering that both CFW and HEN support firmware 4.90 ? Will I lose some features updating to 4.90 and then jailbreaking them ?

Thank you

For HEN you must be on HFW 4.90 if you want to use 4.90

For CFW you can jailbreak it on your current OFW 4.89 then install 4.90 Evilnat. This saves you one installation of OFW 4.90

You won't lose any features. In the first place, the only thing that was removed since 4.80 is the ability to create new PSN accounts directly on the PS3 and the ability to use credit cards directly on the PS3 store, both of which were removed in 4.89, however since it's also blocked on the server side then staying on an older firmware will not help you with that. Use Sony's website to create accounts.
Other than that, changes between 4.80 and 4.90 have mostly been updates to the Blu-Ray AACS encryption keys. Useful if you use your PS3 as a Blu-Ray player but meaningless for games.
You can update to OFW 4.90 and then jailbreak if you want - but it's just plain redundant. bgtoolset works on 4.75 - 4.90, and the CFW version you install doesn't have to be the same version as the OFW you had (can be higher but not lower) so you can remain on OFW 4.89, use bgtoolset then immediately install Evilnat 4.90. If you update to OFW 4.90 first and then use bgtoolset you will end up with the exact same thing, it just takes longer.
For HEN, you do not need OFW 4.90 to install HFW 4.90. You can install HFW 4.90 directly on OFW 4.90. On the contrary, if you update to OFW 4.90 first, you will have to go through recovery mode to install HFW 4.90. You do not have to do that when you install HFW 4.90 on an older OFW.

Hi all,

as of now I've installed succesfully the CFW on the Slim model and I have some other questions:

1) In case of internal HDD failure, which steps should I follow to restore the CFW on the PS3 after replacing the internal drive ?
2) Currently, some PS2 games like Gran Turismo 3 and Gran Turismo 4 stutter while emulatimg, need a "Custom config" to work properly. How can I do that ?
3) To launch PSP games, which loader do you suggest me ?
4) Instead of using the default MultiMan launcher, is it a good idea to use webMAN MOD ? Which advantages will I get using this ?
5) Talking about HEN (I still have to install it on the Super Slim model), is it safe to go online for playing ?

Thanks

First of all - since you have full CFW, the first thing you want to do is to dump the ERK and save a backup somewhere safe. It can be used to decrypt the HDD on your PC should your PS3 ever fail.
As for your questions -
1. If the HDD ever fails and you need to replace it - just replace it with a new drive (note that the PS3 does not support drives bigger than 1TB) and let the PS3 format it. It'll then ask you to insert a USB disk with firmware. Insert a disk with CFW at that point. Do not install OFW or you'll have to go through the entire jailbreak again. It'll accept CFW but it has to be the same version or higher than the one you had before replacing the HDD.
2. PS2 CONFIG Database (aldostools.org)
3. Sorry, I've never played PSP so idk. Just Google it.
4. The first reason you want to have webMAN MOD is for another reason entirely - it has a dynamic fan control function and it usually does a better job than Sony. It can help prevent your PS3 from overheating (but that's not an excuse for not maintaining it!). Other than that, the biggest difference is that webMAN MOD is not an app by itself, but rather an XMB plugin that runs in the background. It has a web interface, which means you can mount games using your browser on a PC or phone, and if you'd rather do that locally, it also allows you to mount games directly from XMB, without having to launch anything prior. Also it allows you to use background services like FTP while playing games (not PS2 games though). The one thing it can't do however is rip physical discs to ISOs, so you would want to keep multiMAN for that.
5. If you want to go online on a PS3 that has HEN, the best thing to do is reboot it and not enable HEN at all. It's relatively safe but can never be 100% safe. I'd say it's probably as safe as disabling syscalls on CFW. If you have fake trophies you'll still get banned because restarting the console does not erase them, and playing CoD BO2/3/later CoD titles can still get you banned because they search the internal HDD looking for any signs of homebrew, doesn't matter if it's running or not. Other than that the risk is minimal but I can't say it's 100% because it never is. Do not use your main PSN account on a jailbroken PS3 if you have anything valuable, especially if you also have a PS4 and/or PS5 on the same account. If you want to use your main PSN account you'd probably want to revert your secondary PS3 back to OFW and reformat the HDD to remove all traces of hacks and use only that.

Hi,

on the CFW model, how can I set full screen for the PS2 games ?

In the picture below with Gran Turismo 3, even if I set on XMB -> Settings -> Game settings -> PS2 upscaler -> Full screen, I got two black borders on the top and on the bottom of the screen with 1080p resolution.

How can I fix it ?

Thank you
