PS3 Resigning Rap files from exdata

Not sure if this has been answered before and I apologise if its bveen covered but..
I understand that CFW 4.86 and 4.87 do not need to have raps signed like we did in 4.84 and below. as long as the sytem is active and the rap files are in exdata in dev_hdd0, when the app starts with will find the rap and do its thing.

My question is, what changed from 4.84 to 4.86 to allow this? Can the change be replicated in a lower firmware if someone was good with CFW builds?

I think it's reActPSN integrated to Cobra feature.

RAPs are not signed. They are used to generate RIFs, and those files are signed.

Cobra has changed. ;) CFW like i.e Rebug 4.84.1 D-Rex doesn't have feature to automatically convert *.rap files to licenses. Use ReActPSN or Apollo.

it might be possible if Joonie added cobra updater to rebug toolbox again. it's tied to his github. iirc, it will say "mixed" if you have two different versions of cobra for cex and dex. I've tried it before.

edit: I don't know if would be possible to update manually or not. the cobra files are in dev_blind/rebug/cobra from what I remember.

I suppose one of the other isuues would be the fact that 4.86 only has the stage2 for cex and not one for dex. Does that mean it would only work on Rex, even if it was ported to a lower FW. Is that what you were meaning @pinky

It could be ported to 4.84, but it would be different.

WARNING: Never try using a stage2 cobra payload from a different CFW version, this will be an instant hard brick. NOR consoles can recover from this type of brick by formatting the HDD, NAND consoles would require a hardware flasher.

I don't recall when the cobra updater was added. it was removed at some point. there's a separate cobra file for cex and dex.

I've recently installed SEN Enabler 6.2.7 on my 4.84 REX Rebug, and after I applied the "version spoof" patch to 4.87, the tool actually updated my Cobra to 8.2

I don't know if it's a known feature or if something weird happened with my setup... but like I said, I was only trying to spoof to 4.87 and ended up getting "cobra-updated" too. After reboot even webman mod reports Cobra 8.2

edit: tagging @Evilnat in case he can provide more info (or confirm feature/bug?)

It might just be reporting what it expects, or it might just be the version is spoofed.

@Evilnat would know if the spoof actually updates the Cobra payload. It's possible but I kind of doubt it as it's not mentioned in the changelog.

this is what I'm thinking too. I didn't look at the changelog, but it seems logical.

SEN Enabler updates Cobra payload while is spoofing (atm it install 8.2 but newer version will install 8.3 from my repo), its a feature.

Cobra 8.3 (WIP) has stage2 fail save by bguerville and aldostools, this avoids hard bricks for NAND and semi bricks for NOR PS3s, and cobra will be disabled while Recovery Menu is loading (thanks to haxxxen).

CFWs below 4.87 can have Cobra 8.3 instead old version, i will update it for all CFW atm or you can do it too if you don't want to wait, as i said is a WIP, but is working fine.

So i have been looking at the stage2.cex file. In the 4.87 and 4.84 firmwares.
In 4.86 and 7 is the offset act.dat but in lower FWs its No Exsist, both are just before the cobra offsets.

Is i really as simple a taking the right offset (I know its not as simple as just the act.dat line) and adding it to the lower firmwares?

He's saying you do not need to do anything except spoof with SEN enabler. Cobra 8.2 has the ReactPSN feature you wanted.

P.S I really doubt it comes down to 1 line, it will require quite a bit of code to handle rap to rif IMO.

thanks for the confirmation, I assumed it was a feature as I saw that my .raps were auto-activated to .rif after the Enabler spoof. :)

nice to hear that Cobra 8.3 will be available as an update for older CFWs too. Specially the anti-brick failsafes are great additions :encouragement:

btw @Evilnat , just wondering...

for example, if I remove the 4.87 spoof with SEN Enabler 6.2.7, will my ps3 be "reverted" to the original Cobra 8.1 too? or the cobra 8.2 update is a "one-time" thing that can't be reverted (unless you reinstall the CFW)?

I think the Cobra update is a nice useful feature, but I'd suggest to have a specific or different option for it. So if someone wants, they can spoof but keep their current cobra version, or for example don't spoof at all and use SEN Enabler only to update their cobra.

Maybe having a "Update Cobra" option? (just an idea)

cheers

I actually tested this today..
I spoofed 4.82 up to 4.87... And pretty much straight away unspoofed.

The cobra payload stayed updated and was able to generate rif files without the need for using psn patch/reactpsn or a resigner
