Restore from another PS3?

Hi all,

Here is my situation. I had a PS3 with a 1TB SSD drive with 47 games, +20 PSN games that were showing up in XMB.

Knowing that I was potentially going to destroy it with a delid, after updating all games and playing them for a bit, I did 2 backups :

1. one complete backup on a USB drive using the XMB backup tool (took 3 days)
2. one full FTP back up to a NAS - literally all the PS3 folders (dev_flash, hdd0, etc.)

Of course the delid was catastrophic..... so I got myself a new PS3 and thought that I could get everything back. But no. After I've transferred back all the folders from my FTP backup, I have 3 issues :

1. only 30 games were showing in Webman
2. when I launch a Webman game I have to re-install all the updates...... why ??
2. all the pkg/PSN games are missing in XMB

Here is what I've done so far :

- I launched the Appollo save tool and all the Webman games re-appeared (47 in total) - probably due to what happens the first time you launch Appollo - not 100% sure but I think it unlocks the games - So my first issue is fixed
- for the missing PKG/PSN games in XMB : they are in dev_hdd0 but are useless at the moment.
- I've used react PSn to import all my rap files which are correctly showing as RIFs in \dev_hdd0\home\00000001\exdata

So here are my questions :

1. if I restore from the USB drive - will I find everything back as it was on the other PS3 ?
2. Why do I need to re-update the Webman games if they were already updated in my backup??
3. Is there a way to have my PKG/PSN games showing up in XMB without reinstalling everything?

Thanks guys! any help appreciated :)

The easiest way is put another 1TB on the "new PS3" and use data transfer utility (over network) between the old and new. Everything will work (you will only need to activate the psn games again).

Edit: Sorry, I only see that the "old" ps3 already is dead after I suggest.

you should do a "rebuild database" after you transfer the games and folders to the new PS3.

on HEN/CFW you should have an option to rebuild database from the XMB... if not, just reboot to recovery and rebuild from there.

System Backup Utility will NOT restore anything which is put in protected archives (licenses, savedata with CP etc.) on different console.

After restoring data in other ways than XMB, You must perform rebuild database because XMB doesn't read contents from fs in real time.

Thanks for chiming in guys.

I didn't find the option to rebuild the Database from XMB so I've rebooted in recovery and did "Rebuild Database" there.

Then back in XMB the PSN games were still missing and also now, when I go in Webman games and select a game, the PS3 completely freezes :(

So I think I must format the drive and start over. Hopefully with the Rebug FTP I'll be able to transfer faster than 18MBps.

Anyway I guess there is no easy shorcut than copying the game folders and then launch every game, install the updates (I still don't understand why I must do that since I backed up updated games?) and reinstall all PKGs ** Sigh **

if you use the original USB backup made from the XMB backup utility, then at least the installed games and regular savegames should be restored with no issues. It's slow, but I never had issues with it. (but I think I only restored a 250GB drive backups, not 1TB)
Then you can do a manual copy of the webman ISOs using IRISMAN or any other manager.

(on a side note, backup/restore on PS4 was vastly improved. With a USB 3.0 drive, you can do it in just a few hours.)

Ok I will restore from the USB drive then. Didn't plan to use the PS3 this week so I'll let it work for 4 days ;-)

Well, restoring from a backup made on another PS3 doesn't look like the best solution :

1. Backup Utility clearly said "you are restoring a backup made on another PS3 so not everything will be restored"...
2. only 17 hours to restore about 900GB of data... when it took 3 days to back up...

So I'm pretty sure I'll miss a lot but hey, if you are right @bucanero, and if the games are restored as they were - so I won't have to re-update all of them - that would be a nice starting point !

I don't really care about my saves, re-updating is what bothers me. If I only have to launch each game and wait for it to create a save game that's perfectly fine.

Also, I would love to recover my PSN games as they were in my XMB, but I doubt this is going to work. I'll try to import the rap files for my USB drive but I don't expect much here. Too bad because it took me a lot of time to install those PKGs and their Raps...

Will post the results tomorrow after the "restore" is complete.

@flowlapache that PS3 was idling at 70° with fan at 50%... and that's why I wanted to delid it. Transferring files wasn't specifically more demanding - I thought it would be because of the encryption - same temps as when in XMB. Not helping you there, sorry.

If You don't have any kind of other copy, You can retrive data from system backup files on PC via ps3xport.

System Backup Utility and Data Transfer Utility are useless shit and shouldn't be used in the first place on hacked consoles because we have free access to whole HDD. If You want know more, read Ultimate User Data Backup Guide. ;)

Restoring a PS3 from the USB drive backup of another PS3 is exactly what Berion said : "useless shit" - games don't even launch.

So I'm now formatting the drive and getting ready to FTP everything. Again. I will then update all games and reinstall all PKGs. Really tough and long process, I really don't want to, but I have no choice.

You can unpack system backup archives, send data via FTP and perform rebuild database on PS3. All will work (except licenses, so also games which using them will wont launch, this is how NPDRM works and this is the reason why users should make *.rap files from his licenses).

@Berion well the last time I did "rebuild the database" from the recovery mode, my PS3 was freezing every time I was launching a game. So not sure about that...

Let me clarify,

on PS3 #1 (before I destroyed it) :
  • I did a full FTP backup of all the PS3 folders (dev_flash, hdd0, etc.) to my PC
  • I did a second - useless - USB HDD backup.
on PS3 #2 (the new one)
  • I'm now uploading (FTP) some of the folders that were backed up on my PC
  • I'm cautious so I just I'm starting with "
    • dev_hdd0/game
    • dev_hdd0/GAMES
    • dev_hdd0/packages
    • dev_hdd0/PS3ISO
    • dev_hdd0/ROMS
The last time I did that, only 30 Webman games were showing but after I launched Appollo then all 47 games were correctly listed in Webman. It has to do with the unlock features of Appollo I guess @bucanero do you confirm?

I would really like to copy over the saves and licenses then rebuild the database as you said, but again, it messed everything up when I tried the last time (see post #5) so unless there something I did wrong and you have a workaround, I'll just go from there, launch each game and waste hours of my life waiting for them to update...

On a side note: I am still completely confused by how in the hell, the games saved from PS3 #1 that were up-to-date, need to be updated again on PS3 #2. This makes absolutely no sense to me.

So I misunderstood You. If You have all data backuped by FTP, then of course there is no reason to mess with "sysbup".

Rebuilding Database have nothing to do with game launching. Also "webman games" (are You have in mind disc images?) have nothing to do, to be showing in XMB only after Apollo saves resigning (WebMAN scanning contents each time on boot as I remember; Apollo doesn't touching them). For me it looks like random issues because if dying HDD.

Saves don't need to be updated (whatever it means). If save came from latest patch available for a game, then in most cases, games demand equal or newer patch version to load such save. It is normal. If I again misunderstood You, correct me trying to be more precise. ;)
