RetroArch CE (Unofficial - Community Edition)

PS3 RetroArch CE (Unofficial - Community Edition) Beta 4

Can someone help me please? I'm obviously doing something wrong! Last night i tried to play Neo Geo gems with no luck. I downloaded uni-bios. Renamed it to uni-bios_4_0.rom and pack it into zip file. The zip i renamed to neogeo.zip and placed it in retroarch's 'system' and '...system/fbneo' folder. Then i put it in 'hdd0/ROMS/NEOGEO' and there i place my six gems in zip format.
I open retroarch and go to manual scan, select 'hdd0/ROMS/NEOGEO/
There i select dat file i downloaded from libretro's github and start scan. It takes about few seconds. Then i have NeoGeo playlist when i go back and i can select games to play but i got an error on fbneo about missing romsets. And on fbalpha 2012 it exits back to rgui.

I tried with clrmamepro on pc. And the errors are the same when i copy rebuilded roms folder on my ps3.

What am I missing?
Please check the documentation at: https://docs.libretro.com/library/fbneo/

This is a summary:
FinalBurn Neo (also referred to as FBNeo or FBN) is a multi-system emulator (Arcade, consoles and computers) under active development.

It is the follow-up of FinalBurn and FinalBurn Alpha emulators.

MAME runs more games, so if FBN is incompatible with a game, those are the next ones to try.

It also requires usage of specific romsets, meaning the rom must have the expected crc/size, and be packaged in an archive with a specific name (the instructions to build those romsets don't differ from arcade's).

You can download the dat files for the latest version of the core from the dats directory.

Bioses will be searched through 3 folders :
  • the folder of the current romset
  • the SYSTEM_DIRECTORY/fbneo/ folder
  • the SYSTEM_DIRECTORY/ folder
The following bioses are required for some of the emulated systems :
  • neogeo.zip (Neo Geo BIOS)
  • neocdz.zip (Neo Geo CDZ System BIOS)
    ...

I think i must be missing a step. I already have that dat file (for neo geo only) i load it in clrmamepro and select an empty folder on desktop for rebuild location. In other folder i have six games and one bios file. That i select as source. I unthick separate bios in advanced options and click rebuild. Than i found 482 files in the folder i selected as output. I place all that files in 'hdd0/ROMS/NEOGEO/' And i always get the same result as i described in my last post. I also tried romcenter and it shrinked the size of roms and fixed game names. Also deleted unneeded stuff. But i always get the same error.

Is it ok if i only have uni-bios_4_0.rom in neogeo.zip?

I fixed it by manualy adding missing files in zip. containers. I used Romcenter to view what's missing and to fix romset error. I placed everything correctly in first place, but while those files were missing it couldn't start any game.
Now i have just 6 games in 'hdd0/ROMS/NEOGEO/' and one bios .zip... as i wanted in first place, and the size of games are somewhat smaller so that is also good.

Try to get all neogeo dumped bios inside the same zip (neogeo.zip). Not only the unibios. And select to use unibios from FBNeo config inside retroarch.

Yeah you're right, that is just what i did, some games also had bad file names and some missing files in zip so i added it manualy and now it works. It's amazing how neogeo games look and play on ps3. With unibios i was able to change console region and unlock cheats and some other fun stuff. Even with shaders there is no fps drop and the games look much better. I have noticed that all of my 32x games freeze when i use 2xscalehq shader on picodrive, dynarec ON. I'm still on hen 3.1.1 and hfw 4.89 so i dont know if it's any different on hen 3.2.2?

One more question, what is the best (graphics) game/system ps3 can emulate well, besides psp/psx/ps2?

Thank you!

Retroarch can emulate well with no issues in most games:
  • Atari 2600 (Stella 2014)
  • MSX / MSX 2 (blueMSX)
  • SG-1000 (Genesis Plus GX)
  • Master System (Genesis Plus GX)
  • Game Gear (Genesis Plus GX)
  • Sega Genesis Mega Drive (Genesis Plus GX)
  • Sega Mega CD (Genesis Plus GX)
  • Sega Mega 32X (Picodrive)
  • NES (FCEUmm)
  • SNES (Snes9x - Current)
  • PC Engine (Beetle PCE FAST)
  • Gameboy
  • Gameboy Advance (mGBA)
  • Neogeo (FinalBurn Neo Light - NeoGeo & CPS Systems only)
  • Neogeo CD (FinalBurn Neo Light - NeoGeo & CPS Systems only)
I don't recommend using the shader that you tried because its very hardware intensive (2xscalehq).
Shaders that look good for 2D games are the ones made by Hyllian. They are optimized for PS3.
They are found here: "ps3-shaders-22-10-02-v13"

Pick for most console systems that were originally played in old CRT TVs this preset: Shaders > CRT > "crt-hyllian-multipass.cgp"

In-game at Quickmenu some cores have Video options (they are not found in shaders), for consoles I recommend to use "blargg ntsc filter: composite", great for NES, SNES and Genesis/Mega. This is to have an authentic experience, but if you want a sharper image use "RGB" instead. For NES I really recommend to be composite, the graphics will look better and be really authentic to what it was in the past, it will almost fake you as it had a better graphics resolution (Old TVs did that to us).

For Arcade games in general (MAMEPlus or FBneo) use this preset: Shaders > CRT > "crt-hyllian-pvm-multipass.cgp" combined with the Video Options from the core: "blargg ntsc filter: rgb". Because Arcades have lots of games that their resolutions are higher than the consoles, they will benefit a lot from it.

In general Retroarch go to Video > find video scale integer and set to true and video scale 3. video scale integer overscale to false. Vsync ON. Aspect ratio decided by core.

In Cores that are console based that were played originally in old CRT TVs in Video options you must set to 4:3 ratio. This is the proportional ratio that the TV shows in the real world, independent of the console. The same will apply for most arcade games (CPS/Capcom and Neogeo games are all 4:3).

PS: The shaders that I recommended have built-in scanlines + a little bit of glow.

Gameboy Advance > In mGBA Video options you can emulate a color palette similar to the LCD one used in the portable console.

Ohhh I read wrong. You mean like the system with most advanced graphics that can be emulated besides PSP/PSX/PS2?
  • Hmm 3D games PS3 can't emulate well, so the best 3D besides the Sony ones would be 3D games from 32X (Starwars), Mega CD (Silpheed) and SNES (Starfox).
  • PC Games from MSDOS can be emulated but they are a shoot in the dark, its about luck and testing.
  • Scummvm games (PC games that are point and click adventure) I think they might work well but I don't know if the Retroarch core is good for that. It's better to use the standalone version from here.
  • There's a Super Mario 64 port in reddit that is an unofficial ps3 port. It's the most close experience to a "newgen emulation" in ps3 that you will have.
  • If you are interested in Sega Saturn games, some titles were released in PSN (USA or Japan, it depends) and some were released for PS2 and you can emulate them.
  • Some Dreamcast games have ports in PSN: Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi and Sonic Adventure, etc.

Thank you mate! That's all I needed to know. I already use fceumm, snes9x, picodrive, fbneo, genesis+gx, and I have experimented with those cores. I have those shaders downloaded but I didn't knew of ones you mentioned. I use only 2xscalehq, that looks great on my 42" bravia tv in genesis and snes games, in some neogeo intensive games i have noticable fps drops and all of the 32x games freeze. I will try what you suggested.
I played sm64 on ps3 and it's a nice hb port and the saturn ports are amazing, I play Daytona USA and I love it.

Thank you once again for clearing this for me.

EDIT: I tried the options and shaders you suggested and I can tell that with those shaders my games look even better. But experimenting with retroarch settings, for me the best result was with vsync off, integer scale off, aspect ratio 16:9 and everything else the same as you suggested... If I set aspect ratio to core provided, integer scale on, my displaying field shrinks, it looks like I set the resolution to ~800x600 and zoomed out!?

Playing with settings I have noticed that if I turn audio sync off and hard gpu sync on, games run at ~2x speed. The consle acts and plays the same on 720p as on 1080p so I choosed higher res.

I still get stutters in some of the intesive neogeo games and 32x games all freeze when shaders are enabled, so I assume it's because of the console limitations. In general I'm satisfied with what I have. Most of my games work as they should and look nice.

I forgot to tell you that 1080p is what I set up in my RetroArch.

I will explain why I set integer scale on, aspect ratio 4:3.
Its because the old generation videogames by design are all 4:3 because of how the old analog TVs scale things.
So game artists and developers, they were aware of it and they designed the pixels, characters and scenario thinking in the TV hardware limitations in mind. If you grab the same game to a new TV it won't be the same experience because of that.
To have the experience that the developers and artist visioned, you must accept that the games must run in a aspect ratio close to a Square (4:3) and not a Rectangle (16:9).
For example, Sonic and Mario in an old TV they look taller and thinner because of 4:3 aspect ratio, so they will look like the art from the cartridge covers. If you set the screen to 16:9, Sonic and Mario will look fat, so they look different as they were meant to.
Integer scale makes the pixels more precise when scaled, making them sharper. Because they won't be 1.5 pixels in size for example, they will be 1.0 pixels or 2.0 pixels, resulting in a sharper image.

Of course if you dislike the zoomed out appearance (everything black around the 4:3 aspect ratio game screen) and you don't care about the original proportions of the game art, you will prefer a full wide screen 16:9 with fat characters and distorted scenarios. That's not my case because I'm more leant to the authentic experience, as I'm a retrovideogames collector.

About the VSYNC OFF, it will make the games faster in some occasions, but because of that the screen can display glitched artifacts like be teared or cut horizontally sometimes when you are playing a high speed scrolling action / racing / shoot'em up game. Because of that my default is ON and if the game needs it, I set it to OFF for that game to be speed up.

I also recommend for Mega/Genesis, NES and SNES to enable the Audio Low Pass filter ON options. Try it and see if you like it. The high pitched sounds are smoother to the ears (specially in NES games like Metroid).

As far as I know this is the most updated version. Download from Brewology the unnoficial package that @aldostools prepared => https://github.com/aldostools/Resources/releases/download/RetroArch_CE/RetroArch_CE.pkg . And after that you can update 1 or two cores that are out of date after running RetroArch from XMB.

I've had a recurring problem with this pkg. I'll install it and it will work fine and then a few days later it will no longer load and just kick me back to the main ps3 start screen. I use HEN by the way if that's helpful.

This seems to be a common issue with RetroArch PS3:
Check if the issue is solved deleting /dev_hdd0/game/RETROARCH/USRDIR/retroarch-salamander.cfg

Another option is delete RetroArch from XMB and reinstall the package.

Update Cheats always freeze my PS3 at 78% of download progression
Update Databases always freeze my PS3 at 87% of download progression

Neogeo CD (FinalBurn Neo Light - NeoGeo & CPS Systems only) ?

I have tried all kinds of methods to try and get Neo Geo CD to work leading to a black screen or back to XMB every time. I have tried putting the neogeo.zip and neocdz.zip in the roms directory. Both inside a 'neocd' folder into retroarch/system folder and even tried inside the folder itself, the roms directory and all my games are in .bin and .cue as it's stated to be according to the core (FBNeo or FBAlpha 2012)... Nothing works. Is there a particular hash src that can verify if it's my games? Or better yet, is there someone who can give me a step by step tutorial on how to get it working because like I've said, I've tried everything and I'm out of ideas now. Thanks guys.

has anyone tried retroachievements with this? it's not letting me get any achievements for sega genesis and sega cd. also i don't know who to get ahold of to fix this.

Hello, is the netplay function of this currently broken? If I try to host a game the audio cuts out and only comes back if I stop hosting. I'm able to connect to my game on ps3 from my pc but the audio cutting out is still an issue, is there a solution for this? Does the netplay work between ps3's?

I never could get it to work, but never messed it with it to much.

Hi,

After a long period of no use of my retroarch CE (due to almost no free time in the past 2 years) I decided to take a rest mentally and turn my PS3 and get some fun with couples roms.

but sadly when i clicked to open Retroarch CE Beta 4 ...loading screen then return to the XMB .... >??
I tried several times with same result.

I decided to erase the program and download and re-install a fresh copy of it.
It worked fine.
I re-installed couples of bios and played...ok it worked flawlessly.

I didnt touched the PS3 for a week until tonight
Guess what ?

Retroarch CE Loading Screen then return to the PS3 XMB.......??!!

Could someone know whats happening here ?
I really need your helps guys

Just delete salammander.cfg and retroarch.cfg and restart. I'm not sure why this is happening, but there is your solution...
You can try to make salammander.cfg read only and see where that brings you.

what i found weird its the first time its doing that after several use of Retroarch CE
may i ask you where i will find the theses .cfg files inside the system ? (path) please ?

EDIT : I found the files , I erased couples of bios that was on my USB drive for the Television like the Dreamcast and a TOSC image and deleted both .cfg and.... IT WORK !!! :)

Thanks you so much Rock777
Now my only friend came home tonight (i see him 1 time per year!) and we will be able to have some funs with roms for the Holidays.

Thanks you for your quick reply/answer

I wish you a super nice holidays !

Best Regards
