PS3HEN Running PS3 game backups on DVD-R

So, I made an experiment on running PS3 game backups on DVD-R dual layer. I have some of DVD-R DL discs that are kept inside my drawer and these DVD-R DL discs were bought from ebay and imported from Japan years ago. Apparently, HEN exploit allows user to run burned PS3 game backups directly without needing to install additional exploit PKG file like discPKG that had been done for years. There are many steps needed to be taken in order to run the DVD-burned PS3 game backups although PS3 game backup ISOs are not optimized for DVD dual-layer and pretty hard to make PS3 trying to replicate what Xbox 360 does with its DVD-format game disc entirely.

I'm using GT5 Prologue game as an example and the first step is dump the game from its original game disc into JB folder format. Then, convert the JB folder format into ISO file back via PS3 ISO Tools v2.2 and burned the ISO file with IMGBurn. Everything seems ok when HEN exploit detects the DVD-burned PS3 game backups as game disc and launched successfully, except one thing - slow ass game data installation where it took much longer than running on original BD-ROM game disc but managed to finished up the game data installation with successfully. I'm also testing other games such as GRID 2 and certain games that boots up directly such as NFS Hot Pursuit (2010) but the results were pretty different.

Running GRID 2 on DVD will ended up being stuck at 40% while hearing the laser head clicking noise meanwhile running NFS Hot Pursuit (2010) on DVD will ended up pretty sluggish, maybe because my DVD burner is not fast enough to burn the ISO file or something else. During the experiment, I'm using DVD-R Dual-layer, not the DVD+R Dual Layer, there's a much differences on these 2 DVD formats. However, you can try it with DVD+R Dual-Layer and before burning, make sure that the PS3 game ISO does not exceeds 8.5GB and delete existing game data first before running it. Also, please note that not all PS3 games that can be run from DVD-R discs.

Hello Amizaim, cfw can run a ps3 game burned on a disk like hen without any other exploit?

Sowwy for the dumb question :ambivalence:

You are a star!

Just make sure the eboot has been decrypted. So Redump copies will not work as they are legit 1:1 backups but the system can't decrypt these. As long as you make the backup was normal methods on the PlayStation you'll be fine.

There is no such thing as "ISO optimizations for DVD dual-layer". DEX OFW on real DEX hw can plays PS3 games from any DVD-/+R SL/DL. The reason of Your problems are probably from low quality discs and/or burn (especially second layer).

Low quality disc? I had been using Japanese made DVD-R dual layer disc, but a rare type of disc with no "RW" markings on it. But, I'm still not tested yet the DVD+R dual layer variant and even single layer ones.

Might gonna check it again, see if burned PS3 DVD game disc achieved same performance as BD-ROM counterparts with remaining of untested media.

No one today producing high quality DVDs, even CDs (for audiophiles) fade out. And even best discs, burner can waste. Check PIE and PIF errors, along with Jitter. If You have Plextor, TE errors count. If You have LG, You cannot check burn quality because their fw doesn't returned this info.

Probably for second layer You will see a great peaks and very non linear Jitter.
