1. Downloaded the FreeDVDBoot ISO from the CTurt Github repository. I created multiple copies burned at lowest possible speed using Imgburn or Brasero.

2. Using the original laser I managed to open uLaunchELF a handful of times from FreeDVDBoot, and didn't follow through the FMCB install when I had the chance. The discs became unreadable. I was able to see visual glitches during those attempts. Now the disc boots into a gray screen then black. The controller light turns on and off.

3. Replaced the laser. The DVD potentiometer on the new laser is calibrated at 980 ohms from the manufacturer. I am able to play DVDs, and ESR patched games.

4. FreeDVDBoot shows a black screen when loading the disc. I've tried unplugging the memory card, and controller. I've also tried waiting 5 minutes for the uLaunchELF to boot. The console language is set to English. The time is also set on the console. I've tried using the diagnosis "on" option as well.

5. Purchased a FMCB memory card and got a black screen when restarting restarting the console.

6. I've also tried the recovery methods, and copying the contents from the FMCB card to my official 8MB card. The issue is that the Boot folder on the FMCB card is too large to fit on the 8MB card.

Seems like I've exhausted my options at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My end goal is to run OPL and play games from an SMB server.

Black screen upon FDVDB and FMCB starting sounds like... modchip conflicts.

Copied OSD Update files to another card will not work, due to they are signed per physical card. That's how Sony designed that.

Anyway, buy MMCE and safe yourself a further headache.

I took both shields apart on the motherboard and it looks like there's no modchip installed.

I'll get an MMCE and see how that goes.

Thank you.

Modchip is something anyone could spot if disassemble console in blink of eye. So that's becoming stranger even more.

What coming to my mind: FMCB will hang if you have inserted USB with exFAT without BDMA. It is because it seeking on USB some recovery stuff and drivers froze, expecting FAT12/16/32.

I recommending PSUja:
https://www.psx-place.com/resources/psuja.1570/
All exploits, basic environments, pre-configured, with cool icons. Additional apps you need to add on your own (goal of the project is to serve as clean base for further expanding).

And if you are curious, why OSD Update stuff on MMCEs not tied to per device the answer is, it does, but sd2psXtd firmware (SD2PSX family) and MCP2 using the same MC IDs so signature generated is always the same for each family.
