So I accidentally updated to OFW?

Hello guys,

well, I suppose I accidentally updated to OFW yesterday but really don't have a clue what the heck just happened.

I was on CFW 4.76 by Ferrox and wanted to update to the new CFW 4.78 by Ferrox which I downloaded from here:

http://www.psx-place.com/forum/ps3-news/4-78-ferrox-cfw-standard-cex-v1-00-alexander-8926.html

As always I plugged in my USB flash drive and went to the recovery menu in order to run the update. Everything seemed to be fine so far.

Then I restarted the system and was apparently on OFW 4.76. Menu entries like "Install Package Files" or "/app_home/PS3GAME" were gone. MultiMan does not launch and attempting to update to CFW 4.76 oder CFW 4.78 (I tried both) cancels with an error code as well.

I don't have an explination for this, I never even downloaded OFW and even compared the file sizes of "CEXFERROX478.PUP" and "PS3UPDAT.PUP" on the flash drive to ensure if it was the right file - and it was of course.

Do you have an idea what went wrong?

I guess I need a hardware flasher in order to downgrade? That's really ****** up to invest at least 70 € - doesn't even matter whether I sell mine and buy a 3.55 or the E Flasher - for this mistake.

Thanks for your replys, greetings from Germany

Did you leave a game disc in the BD drive when you updated by any chance?

this is a reason y not to use the recovery menu. ALWAYS...use update debug. game discs, network - it doesn't matter. u choose how to update.

Either that or a game could have been mounted. And yes you need a hardware flasher or just go legit. Sucks but it has happened to quiet a few. I have system update Debug enabled, latest webMAN MOD, PS3 Lock and use the latest Rebug. All those and it is literally impossible to update to OFW as they make sure it isn't possible. Oh and I remove the update folder after ripping my games before converting to ISO. But new Bluray disc from Sony also have PS3 & PS4 updated on them.

unless u soft brick, never use the recovery menu to update. the recovery menu being "safe" is a common misconception. u can't choose where to update from, so it'll use the hierarchical structure starting with the disc in the drive, so it's technically more dangerous if u forget. xmb + update debug = u choose where to update from and which pup to use. u could have the network enabled and a disc in the drive - it doesn't matter. plus, in the recovery menu, the system reads the version.txt file, so u should know what ur updating to. rebug should have something like rebug or rex with the firmware, habib should have habib with the firmware, rogero should rog with the firmware, etc. official firmware always has just the firmware version. it doesn't say ofw or of or anything like that. that's y devs put that to begin with.

What if my gäme disc ör móunted game has lower FW than Ps3,if y accident will it still update my ps3 tö OFW.

I have seen someone update to a lower OFW then the CFW they are on.

QA Flag then set update Debug to on

Use Rebug firmware that is of the current OFW or spoof to latest OFW

Remove Update folder from games after ripping them

Install XMB Lock or PS3 Lock then disable internet access for "guest" users

Use latest builds of webMAN MOD to ensure the disc isn't mounted upon boot

Use PSN Patch/SEN Enabler

All that to safe guard against updates. It is nearly impossible to install OFE unless you intent to do so.

Hmmm...
Where's that update debug feature?

qa flag ur system to use update debug. it won't matter if the disc in the system is on lower firmware since u'll be selecting the pup u want to install.

I don't mean to sound like a douche a few messages prior to this, but I got some bad news today, and I'm not in a very good mood. don't mind me.

I was one of those, same thing trough recovery because the info that was runing at that time was that it would be better to install CFW trough recovery menu, luckily the disc that i had in the ps3 had an update lower then 3.55 and i could come back to CFW.

I do all of it except installing XMB Lock or PS3 Lock (Dont know what to choose, are any of them compatible with rebug 48.2?)... i also reboot the console before i update to any CFW (so yes, im that paranoid :crybaby:)

Yes QA flag allows you to freely up and downgrade to any firmware and follows the PS3 hierarchy so if I disc is in the drive the PS3 chooses that. Yor lucky as you said it was below 3.55 so you could easliy revert.

Thanks for your replys! :)

Well, I bought Beyond: Two Souls some monthes ago and yep ... the game disc was inserted. So my guess is, that OFW 4.76 is on it and was used during the update process. Damn ...

I "learned" going through the recovery menu in the time when CFW 3.55 was new. But I also remember that you always should remove your disc ... which I actually never did, because I used some old FIFA 08 disc just to mount games via MultiMan, which has of course a very old OFW on it.

I guess I have to sell my PS3 then and get a new one with OFW 3.55 ... which are of course more expensive. What a crap, costs time and money. :(

it's best to use update debug like I mentioned. it doesn't follow the hierarchy, because u can choose which firmware to install. I leave a disc in the drive every time, and there's never been an issue.

Yes Update Debug is the best way but has its issues as well. Because it will allow one to also accidentally install an OFW that is higher then 3.55 but lower then say 4.76 since allows one to freely up and downgrade. So if an issue arises that prompts a firmware reinstall and one forgets there is a disc inside say you were on 4.78 CFW and went to reinstall it after a forced reinstall. If you had a disc inside with say 4.50 you forgot about since you enabled System Update Debug it would install the FW from the disc. So while it is best it also had side effects if yo are careful most are unaware of.
