SSD Upgrade error code 8002F22F trying to update to 4.89

Hello, I am new to this site.

I have purchased a Slim cech-3001a 160GB PS3 USED online that was not on Dex.

I have recently upgraded the OS to update 4.89

I have performed a backup of all data to an external Drive.

I created the USB bootable media with the 4.89 update from Sonys website and made sure the drive was FAT32. (It's a 1gb drive made around 2008?) I made sure it goes PS3>UPDATE>Pup file

I purchased a Samsung Evo 870 1tb Drive that I want to use as the new drive.

When I plug in the new drive, and turn on the system, it asks to connect the controller and then press start and select to find the Update.

I plug the stick into the right port and press select and start and it checks for a little while, then I get presented with the error message (Critical error, please contact technical support 8002f22f)

I have just performed a 9 hour system restore last night and read that this can help, however it did not.

I have just taken out the drive and put in a 500gb SSD from crucial to try and perform the operation however it received the same error.

Am I missing somthing?? Any tips?

If it's allowed, i'm willing to pay for support.

I just want to upgrade the Drive. Nothing else really. Just a faster drive is all i'm wanting here.
Thanks
( reason for edit: added cech-3001a for model)

You can look up error codes HERE. that one only says that there is a problem with the hard drive.

i would suggest using a regular hard drive. the ps3 is older than ssd technology and was never meant to use one. some work fine. some have problems eventually. also the electronics between hdd/ssd and the memory/cpu is not as fast as the ssd. using ssd can be a little faster but not as fast as a modern console or pc would be using one.

anyways, good luck :)

Ah, ok got it.

Just for clarification, does the SSD have to be in a particular format?
Resident evil 6 takes forever sometimes.

Welp I found my answer.

The drive I purchased is a SATA III.

The PS3 only reads SATA II drives.
Both SATA III HDD or SSD work on SATA II and I devices, the only difference is that the transfer speed will be reduced. Cannot use the maximum capacity of SATA III. I used Kingston 120GB SSD. I know other people who have had problems using SSD EVO, but try using another flash drive first.

Ok got it. Thanks for the tips!

I put on a new USB and received a new error.. for the first time ever.

The new error code is the following:

8002F2CF =
Issue with the Mass Storage Device when installing firmware, or PS3 hard drive

My old code forever was the following:

8002F22F=
Issue with the PS3 hard drive

Thoughts?

The new usb I was just testing is a ADATA 16gb 3.0 USB

I also have a blank Crucial M500 SSD Model: CT240M500SSD1 250GB

That I have been testing with. So far it is consistent with the 870 1TB Samsung Evo in terms of error messages.

The Crucial gets the same error message as the Evo when I plug in my ADATA 16gb 3.0 USB drive.
____
I just tested with a new San disk Ultra USB 3.0 32GB thumdrive formatted to fat32 and the Evo 870 and received error code 8002F2CF.

I tested with the crucial drive and it's displaying error code 8002F22F.

I tested each drive twice to see if they would display different codes, however they stayed the same.

Crucial = 8002F22F
Evo = 8002F2CF

So that's the first difference i've seen between the two SSD's.

are you using a USB hub while installing firmware? it can cause problems. i mention it because those codes look familiar.

Sorry for my ignorance on this matter I wouldn't have a clue.

but would a SSD improve over all performance on my PS3 if I swapped out my factory 500gb one? It's a superslim model Cech 4202C.

mine Lags abit and takes ages to load sometimes

I'm not using a USB hub. I'm directly connecting the USB Drive to the USB port on the console itself.

I actually Seen someone with the exact same issue as this the other day though after a 4.89 update maybe it's messing with HDD compatibility

They had a Samsung SSD aswell

If You asking about logic structure, no, PS3 will format it by her own exotic way and encrypt it. Anything from outside this PS3 will be for her unknown data and will want format it.

Ok I have just put in a Seagate 1tb sshd ST1000LM014 and received error code 8002F2CF.

I've tried with my Attache 1gb thumb drive and also with my Sandisk ultra 32gb thumb drive and receive the same error.

I saw this drive had worked for someone else.

Any more tips? Can we add update 4.89 to the subject title of this post please?

I have finally got it to work from trying from a different USB drive. The drive doesn't have a name unfortunately, but I just kept trying and it finally took. However it is very glitchy , not loading properly.

I put back in my original drive.
It works fine, it did wipe all if my data though. Good thing I uploaded my trophies to pan. I tried to restore from backup but it doesn't read the backup.

Just going to start from scratch. Thanks for help everyone.

Just stumbled to this thread on an L04 saved from junkyard today. Some folks, who used to own it, gave it to someone "knows how to fix things". Well, they arent that of a knowledge. So, Brought it home, tried to redo the og hdd (80gb), was full with bad sectors, and donwloaded ofw 4.55 (its og, and late fw), and installed it onto a 40gb hdd. Worked. but with 4.92 ofw was giving the error this thread is about.
HD sentinel just finished with the og 80gb hdd
And fixed 182 bad sectors, locked 6, and stabilized 2. :)
So this little fella' saved from landfill. =) I am truly thankful. :)

@DrDawk You unnecessary agreed for disk formatting. You could make sector by sector copy and restore it after disk format and assigning. Or read data from that disk on PC if you have EID Root Key (ERK).

//oh crap, ancient post :P

@carr You cannot remove bad sectors. It is physical damage, irreversible. Sectors can be excluded from LBA but that needs special software which modifying service area/talk with disk via TTL etc. etc. On high level, you can exclude specific sectors from filesystem but S.M.A.R.T of course will be showing them, and this is useless in PS3 case because she formatting and encrypting drive by its own.
