PS3 Strange PS3 slim issues - possible HDD problem?

Hi all,

I acquired a slim CECH-3000 the other week. When I first got it, it would freeze on the XMB or randomly shut down (as if someone had yanked the power cord out) within a couple of minutes of starting up.

I was able to get to ps3toolset via the web browser which showed that the freezes/shutdowns were accompanied by A0801601 and 1701 (Cell livelock and BE Attention), and then a lot of 5FFF entries.

I saw on the dev wiki that one possible cause of these errors is a faulty hard drive - I took it out, and sure enough, it would sit at the "appropriate system storage cannot be found" screen with no shutdowns at all.

So, I replaced the HDD and that seemed to effectively resolve the issue. The odd crash since but nothing too weird (usually when playing GT6, a game that has crashed at some point on every PS3 I've ever played it on).

However, the other day the original pattern of instability returned with the same shutdowns/freezes occuring within a minute or two of startup.

It was at this point I also discovered that tapping the case, even lightly, would usually cause the console to immediately freeze, suggesting there is something loose or not connecting properly.

This was accompanied by the same 1601 and 1701 errors as last time, although I did see a 14FF and 1802 in there as well.

Rather than replacing the HDD this time, I just took it out and reinserted it - and sure enough, after doing that it seemed to work absolutely fine. No freezes/shutdowns (I tapped the case a few times again to be sure), and it happily played a good couple of hours of various games with no issues.

So - with this pattern of behaviour in mind, is it likely that it is something to do with either the HDD or the connector within the PS3? Or is it something completely unrelated that replacing/reseating the HDD coincidentally seemed to fix? Seems like 1601 and 1701 errors are generic enough that it's very difficult to diagnose the cause from those alone - 1802 and 5FFF do concern me a little though as they seem to be RSX-related, but both have only appeared once and not since reappeared having reseated the HDD.

I can provide some photos of the error log and/or record video of what's happening if that would assist in diagnosis. Any help would be much appreciated because I'm strongly considering returning it to the seller as faulty if I can't find some sort of reliable fix!
