Hey guys.
I found my old PS3 in storage a few days ago and wanted to set it up again. It didn't have the harddrive, so I searched my house and found one in the ps3 drive casing (Its an SSD samsung, so it's not the original drive and I have no idea if it was used on the PS3 or not).
Anyways, when I start the PS3 I get an error "The system cannot be run correctly, install 3.40 or later". The PS3 will not go to the main home page at all.
I downloaded version 3.55 and put it on my USB (PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP), put the USB into the PS3 and pressed SELECT and START, it starts checking then says "The data is corruped".
I downloaded version 4.87 from the playstation website, did the same as the above, and it says "No applicable update data was found".
Versions I've tried (3.40, 3.50, 3.55 and 4.87), tried different websites too.
Other things I've done:
- Bought a new USB 2.0 with 8gb storage and formated as Fat32
- Formatted SSD as Fat32
- Tried both ports on PS3
- Tried removing PS3 charger while it's checking
My PS3 details:
Model: CECH-2503A (Slim)
Date code: OC
Location: UK
I have no idea what firmware the PS3 was on previously, or whether it was jailbroken or not.
Please help me to fix this, or atleast tell me the PS3 is bricked with no hope so I can stop searching for a fix.
Thanks guys
*Edit*
I've also tried both CEX and DEX versions, and get the same issue.
I've searched so many forum posts and have done everything except replace the SSD
**I was able to get it working**
It turned out that my console was on DEX, and so I had to find a compatible version. I used rebug 4.84.2, and it worked perfectly.

Some additional things that may or may not have indirectly contributed to it working:
- Make sure the USB is formatted correctly, I used the below guide:
(Make sure the USB is partitioned as MBR to do this, Open CMD, Type "disk part", Then "List disk", Find the USB, Type "Select disk X" (X = the number next to your USB), Type "Clean", Then "Convert mbr", Then select the usb by typing "Select disk X" like last time, and type "Create partition primary", Then "select partition 1", Then "Active", Then "Format fs=fat32 label=(the name of the usb) quick")

- Use a USB with little storage, I used a 2.0 USB with 8gb storage.
- Use the rightmost port on the console for the USB
- Uplug the controller charger as you click START + SELECT
Hope this helps
