PS3 Unable to launch homebrew

Hi everyone! I installed Rebug 4.86.1 LITE on a CECHA01 fat PS3 that had OFW 4.86 using the PS3 toolset and it looked like everything was installed correctly.

Now when the PS3 boots up I get the Rebug splash screen but when I check the System Information I still see Version 4.86

Despite seeing the red icons and package manager whenever I try to open any homebrew the PS3 hangs in a black screen. It seems like custom firmware was installed but it doesn't work anyways? I tried going into recovery mode and rebuilding the file system as well as the database but still can't seem to run any homebrew.

Any ideas?

Took some pictures to illustrate the issue:

Rebug installed but after it launches it hangs. Same thing happened with multiman and iris manager.

I thought it was supposed to say Rebug in the system information.

Went to the toolset and it looks like when I tried to flash it for the first time.

The log shows this error.

it wont say rebug...just the version number. i dont think the toolset will change because you can still use it to make a backup dump.

@bguerville would know what the error means.

does your ps3 read discs? (if the drive is broken then you may need nobd cfw and some things wont work untill drive is fixed or replaced)

Yeah I recently bought this PS3 and it had advertised that the Blu-ray drive didn't work. I didn't think I would need it so I bought it anyways. Didn't know there was nobd cfw. Thanks for the input Coro.

The discs dont need to read as such it can still have a faulty laser and still work. as above said tho u do how ever need the BD drive connected properly and make sure it has a working logic/daughter board. if either of these aren't connected or working any apps will do this not just ur rebug apps.

since it is an original model it is worth fixing but it can also be harder. first check that the cables for the drive are connected on both ends and are not damaged. if you have to change the drive or board then you also have to "remarry" the drive to get it work. after that you use regular cfw.

you can install nobd rebug. the download link is in this thread. read the first post where it says "for nobd users" to see the limits of nobd. there are three pup files in the download so make sure you get the right one.

The drive was reading regular PS1 games but not PS2 games or blu-rays when I first turned it on. I put on fresh thermal paste and I must have damaged the ribbon when I put it back together. I'm going to try to see if I can get another one. Thanks for all the help guys!

I do have a Blu-ray drive I can cannibalize from an 80gb model that I bricked a while ago. I'll try switching the board (or would the laser be easier?) and see if that works.

IF the problem is lens related as I expect & the lens from your other BD drive is compatible, a lens swap would be the easiest way to go imho. Not very difficult to do & there is no need to remarry the BD.

It's extremely rare that a BD issue is caused by a fried BD daughter board so I doubt that changing the board will solve your problem. Moreover, if you can play an audio CD or a ps1 game on CD, the board is most likely just fine.

Beware of the ribbon cable connections, manipulate the sockets locking mechanisms carefully & make sure the cable is properly inserted in the sockets.

You should check the psdevwiki for BD drive models & parts compatibility.

I just checked the 80gb PS3 and its a BMD-06. If I'm understanding the devwiki correctly that's a 2 lens laser and won't be compatible with the CECHA01.

This matches perfectly whith everything you mentioned, at the time you opened the PS3 you forgot to connect one of the ribbon cables... or you broke a connector from that cables

And yes, the best test you can do to see if the BD drive is working is by trying to play a CD audio disc... then a DVD video disc... and finally a BD game disc

But keep in mind a laser have several diodes (the active component that emits the laser beam) and 99% of the lasers dies because the BD diode gets fryed
So... is very usual to see BD drives that can read CD and DVD... but not BD
In that case it means the laser is damaged, but you are not even close to that point... the first thng you need to do is to reconnect the flat cables and verify that it can read CD and DVD

Hey guys! I know its been a while since I posted but just wanted to let you know the PS3 is fixed! I ordered a replacement laser and a ribbon cable and they took a long time to get here because of COVID delays. The laser got here first so I changed that but games still didn't launch. The ribbon cable took forever to get here because I ordered it from overseas. When I replaced the ribbon cable the drive started working so everything works now! Anyways thank you guys for pointing me in the right direction and for being patient with me.

Hello, having a very similar problem. Just jailbroke my ps3 a couple weeks ago, everything took, running Evilnat 4.87 cfw cex. I have been trying to run various homebrew apps, such as multiman, and although everything installed and the icons came up in my xmb, each time I click on one of the homebrew apps the system flashes to a black screen and then kicks me back out to the XMB. I have tried to restore setting/rebuild database etc., all to no avail.

I thought the issue was a defective bd player (mine would not eject discs or load discs, had to load and eject upon startup), so I just replaced it this week hoping that would solve the problem but it did not. Some more info: I have a CECH 2051a, and was able to get a replacement BD player that now functions properly (discs load, read, eject, etc.), without having to remarry the BD player.

I even tried reinstalling the cfw, again nothing worked. multiman and all other homebrew continue to load to black screen and then spit me back to the XMB.

Lastly, before replacing the the BD player I downloaded and installed Evilnat noBD, hoping that would fix things, but issue persisted.

I should also add that the only homebrew I can get to run is psnpatch (was trying to load some RAP files to play some DLC and although it runs properly, the RAP files were never loaded, so I think I need to rip my game from disc to the HDD first hence trying to get multiman to run).

Any help would be appreciated!
